The grant is provincial dollars. It was actually quite rare the municipalities worked together to even approve applying for it. There has been a lot of mudslinging with that group with things like hostile annexations to not approving developments

That's a picture I saw on facebook depicting what it will look like.

"
The Edmonton Oilers and city councilors have agreed to split the cost of the final $30 million needed to green light the plan o build a new arena in city’s downtown in time for the 2016-17 NHL season! Construction is to start next spring and the city plans to pay off some of its debt through increased tax revenues from shops and businesses expected to spring up around the arena. The total cost, including the rink and surrounding infrastructure, comes in at $604.5 million.
Under the arrangement, the Oilers are to pay $161.5 million, the city $279 million and another $125 million is to come from a ticket tax. Political leaders from surrounding regions will also apply for $25 million in regional grants and an additional $14 million in grants for a community rink attached to the project."

Honestly that picture looks surreal.

Holy. ####.

That's not the best part, from the top it looks like the head of a Golf club, so it follows the Oilers theme.

Except it sticks out like a sore thumb and looks out of place being plopped in moribund downtown Edmonton.

Edmonton or not, you gotta admit it looks fantastic. Nice and modern without a hint of nostalgia. Calgary is going to have a its work cut out....which is great.

Modern? That's a classic design that Kohler has been using on its toilets for decades.

The mock ups on the building look pretty cool. Everyone has their preferences, but tough to see how one couldn't admit it looks like a very to notch facility they will be getting.

I have no doubt the Flames will deliver the same, but of course people will debate like crazy in tiny margin of personal preference which project is better, and will dramatize how much one group missed the mark depending which design they personally prefer.

I think it looks like a great facility (at least from the renderings) and is in a very good (central) part of town. I'm excited to see what the final design will look like and how it will improve the area around it. It's a beautiful building and Edmontonians should be excited for it.

I have a feeling it's still going to be more expensive by the time it's done.

I think the 600 includes stuff not included in the original 450.

I think the original 450 is now 480.

I don't know, I still have an overwhelming urge to flip the roof up and pee. It looks like a stylized Japanese toilet

When all is said and done, according to Sportsnet the city will end up paying 279 of a 604 million project. That's less than half the project, and compared to the 200 million estimate to renovate Rexall, that 79 million is probably money well spent.

I hate the Oilers, and my property taxes will be affected somehow from this deal, but I can live with this deal.

Absolutely. When has a construction project ever finished on or under budget?

Did the City agree to pick up the tab on overruns? Because there will be overruns.
