Default Dallas fires Glen Gulutzan and Paul Jerrard

"Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that head coach Glen Gulutzan and assistant coach Paul Jerrard have been relieved of their coaching duties, effective immediately.

Jim Nill will be available to the media today at 3:00 p.m. inside of Dallas' locker room at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco. Audio of Nill's statements will be posted on StarsMediaCentral.com shortly after media availability.

"I would like to thank Glen Gulutzan and Paul Jerrard for the work they provided to the Dallas organization over the past four seasons," said Nill. "They are both quality coaches and men, but we have decided to go in a different direction with our coaching staff and we wish them well in their next endeavors."

Gulutzan, 41, was the 21st head coach in franchise history and led the club to a 42-35-5 record in 2011-12, and a mark of 22-22-4 in the shortened 2013 campaign.

Assistant coach Curt Fraser and goaltending coach Mike Valley will both be retained by the club moving forward. "

Nothing out of the ordinary really as the new GM wants his coach and this will likely be a good offseason to be looking for head coaches with Ruff, possibly AV available.

Too bad. He's a decent coach, but didn't have the best tools.

That said - if he won his last 3 games of the season he could have made the playoffs. Something similar last year IIRC. So if you are going to be judged on making the post season, he didn't get it done.

In the end - its a new GM wanting to bring in his own guys (although he kept the goalie coach). That's fair. If you are going to be taken to account, you want it to be for your own employees, not your predecessor's hire.

Dallas has a good collection of youth, a new owner, a GM considered to have great potential, a nice building in one of the biggest sports markets in NA. So it should be an attractive destination.

Is the Stars new owner committed to spending to the Cap, or are they still going to be a team with an internal budget?

It frustrates me that Dallas has Jim Nill and we are stuck with Jay Feaster.

I didn't realize that Nill is Albertan too.

Well now we will finally find out if Nill is the real deal or a guy that looked good by association with one of the great GM's of our time. Sometimes a really great decision maker makes everyone below him look good. Look at Bill Belichick. Teams have taken his assistants, GM and all of them have flamed out miserably on their own while he still keeps winning. So far Yzerman has been a mixed bag and we will find out with Nill if maybe Holland is the guy that makes everything tick in Detroit.

Curt Fraser was the head coach of the Wings AHL team for many years before going to Dallas last season as an asst.

Will be interesting to see if he goes with an experienced coach that is a known quantity or a first time NHL coach. Hard to pass up a guy like AV if he is available IMO.

I think Tippett ends up back in Dallas for the second time.

No matter what he does, we can be assured that it will be followed up with plenty of "that's the type of move we need in Calgary" comments.

Biggest mistake Darryl Sutter made as GM, more than the Phaneuf trade and Kotalik fiasco, was hiring his brother instead of Tippett when he was available. That 2010 Flames team could have been "something special" with him as coach I think

My under the radar prediciton is Bill Peters, currently assistant coach in Detroit. Won a memorial cup in Spokane.

I would assume Nill would like the team to play a Detroit- like high speed puck possession game.

That would exclude Tippett from the proceedings.

I'd like to see Willie Desjardins get a shot at a NHL head coaching gig (currently head coach of the AHL Texas Stars).

Fraser was also head coach for 3+ dismal season in Atlanta, although they had some pretty dismal rosters to match:

Lubos Bartecko
Yannick Tremblay
Tony Hrkac
Dean Sylvester
Nelson Emerson
Andreas Karlsson
Per Svartvadet
Steve Guolla
Chris Tamer
Tomi Kallio
Todd Reirden
