Angelina Jolie has preventive double mastectomy
http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/14/showbi...html?hpt=hp_t2
Quote:
Actress Angelina Jolie announced in a New York Times op-ed article on Tuesday that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carries the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
|
Here is a link to her self-wrote article on it: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/14/op...ice.html?_r=1&
Quote:
My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.
|
Quote:
But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness.
|
She goes into a lot of detail. Wow...just wow. Good on her bringing this forward to raise awareness.

Thats what Christina Applegate underwent after being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. She too carries the BRCA1 gene.

Good for her for going public and bringing awareness. A well written article. I also remember Christina Applegate going through the same thing and thinking how awesome she was about it. She was so positive and was even able to find humor in her situation.
To have two beautiful and successful women show that it's not the end of the world has to be inspiring to other women going through the same thing.

I wonder how much that would cost an uninsured American?

I am glad that she decided to undergo the procedure and take care of herself instead of focusing on image and all that. I hope that this brings awareness to the issue and that she is well

This will be a hard time for the men of CP.

Life >>>>> Big natural boobs. I'm sure the implants will be undetectable and possibly an enhancement. Good on her though for bringing out awareness and being an example for women that the risk is not worth it.

$15,000 - $55,000 (and up) depending on the type of procedure, hospital, and complications. This does not include the cost of any radiation therapy ($10-50,000+), chemotherapy ($30,000+), and breast reconstruction ($5,000 - $50,000).
Absolute bare minimum for preventative double-mastectomy and reconstruction: $20,000.

Ok, so something else will be hard for you.
That's fine. To each his own.

Can't speak for anyone else but I personally think Angelina Jolie is so beautiful that the large natural chest was just the cherry on top of the proverbial sundae.
Besides which given her income I can imagine she probably has the best cosmetic surgean that money can buy.
Life vs. Vanity... not a hard choice, terrible that she had to choose though. Good on her for maximizing the odds that her and Pitts sizable brood will have a mother for a long long time.

Completely ignorant question on my part, but do people in the US shop around for the best health care deal?
Are some hospitals in high demand for their rock bottom prices?
I suppose that only applies to people without HMO's, but it's just such a foreign concept to me.

I don't want to sidetrack the thread but to me she looks like a women that has been ridden hard. She's only 37 but looks like she's in her 40's.

What can I say, I like boobies. I also like not having to hacky sack the boobie up to my mouth if I want a little nipple time.

Yeah, I'm well aware of that. When amputating parts of your body is preventative measure against something, that something is kind of a dick. I think you might be too slow to play for the Penguins...
