I don't like Gillis but i agree that the trend is Big and Gritty. Don't agree that it just came up though, its been like that for a couple of years.
Makes me really wonder what Feaster was thinking icing the team he did this year? Feaster has a lot of work to do and my bet is a lot of other teams want to get bigger and grittier. I highly doubt there is going to be much demand for our soft players this summer.

Feaster wasn't with the Flames four years ago. He is going into his third season with the Flames. i think this is where the Flames are heading as well though. Bigger and more skilled. Hudler and Sven will likely be the smallest forwards going into next season.

Gillis did say he wanted to keep the core. Made it sound like it was more about changing up the support players and getting younger and cheaper.
Roy, Raymond, Luongo among others all gone I'm guessing, and bring in some younger, bigger, cheaper replacements. I don't think the Sedins, Kesler, Burrows, Edler, etc are going anywhere.

I kinda wish they made it a nine game series, so we could watch them get swept again tonight.

Isn't this exactly what MacTavish said also. I'll bet Nonis and Bergevin are about to say the same things shortly. Need more size, need more grit.

Gillis is such a putz. Still can't believe he won an award for GMing the Canucks.
He came in in 2008, and inherited a team that had just about every key piece for the eventual 2011 Cup run (and back to back Presidents trophies) already in the fold.
H. Sedin
D. Sedin
R. Kesler
A. Burrows
S. Salo
A. Edler
K. Bieksa
M. Raymond
J. Hansen
R. Luongo
C. Schneider
Even the flippin coach was already in place.
The Ehrhoff trade was a good one, as was signing Tanev I guess....but any doofus could have inked Hamhuis (or Garrison for that matter) just by giving a half way decent offer, because Vancouver is where those BC boys wanted to go anyways.
He hasn't really drafted anyone decent outside of the first round, and the best guy he did pick in the first round was Hodgson, who he traded for a big dummy with the hockey sense of a shoe.
Speaking of trades, the Ballard for Grabner + 1st (Howden) trade and Booth acquisition were just as brutal as the Hodgson deal. Didn't give up anything worth worrying about in the Booth deal, but what a horrible contract.
...and on top of all of that, the Luongo "captaincy", umpteen year contract and horrible mismanagement of trading him has been icing on the cake.
Hopefully he keeps doing what he's been doing, all while his inherited core keeps getting older and more playoff fragile. Should have that organization run into the ground in no time.

He isnt the "winner" that Kevin Lowe is.. no question. he fits right in with that team as he is a whiny, blowhard....

I think the Sedins and Kesler are safe, but Burrows is 32 years old and doesn't currently have a NTC (it kicks in July 1st). He led the entire league in minor penalty minutes this season and I think Canucks management feel that he will never get a fair shake from the officials as long as wears a Canucks uniform.
As for Edler, I think they're not very happy with his play this season and they do have some pretty good depth on defense (Tanev and Corrado both are young and look pretty good). I could see a team like Philly being interested in Alex Edler.

Edler is definitely someone I could see being moved. My gut says that Edmonton will be in the running for him and will be dangling their first rounder...

I hate the Canucks roster. Is there anyone who you guys would welcome to the Flames?
Definite NO's
Burrows
Sedin's 1 and 2
Bieksa
Lapierre
Higgins
Garrison (contract)
I like Edler but the price will most likely be too high.

Fair enough, maybe Edler will still be moved. As for Burrows, I don't think it matters what jersey he wears the refs all know his act now. He's marked for life. He is set to make 4.5 million starting next year for 4 years. He may not have a NTC, but that contract is pretty close to one.

If I'm Vancouver I take that and run. Edler was dominant at times a few years ago and the Canucks clear #1 d-man, but the past year and a bit he's really come back down to earth. Didn't look very good in the playoffs this season. He will have a cap hit of 5 million until 2019......if you can get the Oil's 1st rounder for him you do it.

Really? There's no guarantee that whoever you draft at 7th is going to be as good as Edler and if he is, it will likely take a good 4-5 years to do so.
It's difficult to develop defencemen they are often more of an unpredictable curve than forwards, top ones don't come available very often.
Not saying that's a bad trade for Vancouver, just saying it's not the slam dunk you are making it appear.

I wouldn't trade Edler for any pick outside the top 3 this year
and with all of Tampa prospects and their lack of D I could definitely see them interested in Edler, whether it's enough who knows
more likely I would try and trade him to Philly or Winnipeg in a deal for a package around one of their (many) young forwards
I still like Edler, at his worst he's good for 45-50 points going forward and solid defense and he's a top pairing guy on almost all teams in the league
but the Canucks need an injection up front, and of youth up front, and you need to give up value to get that, and their value is on D where even without Edler they still have a very good top 5 in Hamhuis/Garrison/Bieksa/Tanev/Corrado

I don't see an Edmonton trade happening for two reasons
1. is the Division
2. is their young forwards the Canucks would be interested in are all ready top line players (Hall/Eberle), and Hall especially I said earlier this year I would take Seguin but I was extremely impressed with Hall's 2nd half of this season, if he stays healthy he's a stud.
And the other two (Nuge and Yakupov) are 1st overall picks which aren't being moved
their next group are big step below the potential Winnipeg/Philly guys (Couturier/Schiefle)

Also saw someone bring up an interesting point, can you buyout a traded player?
if the Canucks possibly give Booth a chance to have a healthy season, or find someone who will take Ballard for a bag of pucks
could they go to a cap strapped team and say we will take player x to buy him out plus someone we want?
i.e Upshall in Florida?
or maybe, if/when Pitt flames out and they make a push for Luongo, I am guessing the Canucks would get a lot more back if they could say "we will take Fleury back to buy him out"

Just a slam dunk if I was Gillis. He needs to shed salary and the Canuck prospect pool is very poor........I would trade Edler for the 7th pick and sign another d-man at a lesser salary. You then hope a player like Tanev or Corrado take a step forward next year to solidify the defense.
I guess I'm just not impressed with him the past season or so, and I liked his play 2+ years ago.....if he's starting to level off and he's going to make 5 million until 2019 I'd make that deal.

Bieksa no as a Flame? Cmon now. I hate the Canucks like anyone else but Bieksa is a great piece on defense.

Edler likely won't even come close to getting you a top 3 pick in this draft with the calibre of players available
