it will be a multi-purpose facility - but that does not mean a multi-purpose building. As he continued and clarified, the impression that I got (as others did as well) was that he meant it would be multiple different facilities in one location - much like Phoenix, I presume.

He was specifically asked about a football field and pretty much said yes, that would be included. And it was at this point that he said it would NOT be a multi-plex type facility - football fields and hockey rinks do not fit into the same building (paraphrasing of course)

Can't remember what he said about an announcement timeline... 6 - 8 months maybe?

My guess from KK's comments are, they are making a smaller version of "LA Live". It will include 2 stadiums ( one for hockey, one for football), a movie theater, restaurants and a hotel. Maybe even a 5000 accoustic theater for smaller shows and plays ect..

So where would something of that size go?

No idea, don't live in Calgary anymore. If they are building a football stadium and seperate hockey rink, like KK is suggesting, the rest ( hotel, theatres, restaurants) can easily be put in between the 2.

My guess is that its not going to be anywhere close to the stampede grounds. The city might even have to put in an extra transit line if its far enough away.

I believe that Ken King has confirmed that it will be in the city centre somewhere.

Everything in your post was very accurate. I think all season ticket holders have routines and have maximized the best ways to avoid lineups and get in and out of the arena as quickly as possible.

However, one thing a new building will ultimately provide is space. The newest rink I have ever watched a game in was Anahiem. With a concourse on all three levels, the lineups and crowds on the concourse were dramitcally reduced compared to the Saddle Dome. There was space for tables to lean on and eat through out the concourse. Much nicer than the Dome.

not sure who own's all the land, but the block east of the arriva could fit the rink, and that dirt pitch beside the railroad tracks could fot the football stadium. That area is already becomeing "LA Live" district. The future cantos national music center is just on the other side of tracks. A couple hotels are being planned as well. Add in the stampede and all it's expansion to become a "year round destination".

Not a chance they build this on Stampede grounds.

They've been giving money away to the Stampede board for nearly 30 years and want to have more control over the land and things like all that parking revenue that goes straight into the Stampede boards' pocket.

Flames owners bought up most of the land in the West Village over the past few years. With the new WEST LRT built and Sunalta St right there, it only makes sense that this new district would be built over there.

I'm not from Calgary (born in Calgary, have lived in Lethbridge for 27 years), so I'm not 100% certain if you're talking about the same area that I am thinking about. If you are, I didn't think there was enough space to host an NHL arena, a CFL stadium, hotels and other entertainment venues as well as sufficient parking.

Do you have a source for them buying up the west village? I hadn't heard that, so even if it was verbally I'd be interested in knowing where you got that info. (Commercial realtor?)

Good to see that a new football field is included as the football field situation is far more dire than the arena situation. McMahon is more suitable for Heritage Park than sports events in the year 2013.

Yup the Stamps really need a new owned Stadium, they really are missing out on some amazing money opportunities in a concourse.

It would be nice to have a properly heated concourse as well. I'm tired of peeing icicles at half time in October.

I thought it was announced they were going to put in 50M in McMahon refurbs, has that been put on hold?

When I first moved down here I had tickets for 2 years but the terrible concourse and crazy steep stairs drove my interest away. A huge sports complex would be awesome if it ever happened.

I wonder if the City would support the development if it happened West of downtown - they seem more concentrated on the East Village. Any West Village complex of that size would require some road upgrades one would think. Close to downtown sort of makes sense as they could make a killing on parking on days the complex wasnt being used.

Here is another vote for a new football stadium. The Saddledome is certainly not one of the more worn out public buildings I have visited recently. McMahon would be up there. Built in 1960, it is soon to be the worst football stadium in the CFL.

KK suggested at the STH lunch that if they 'broke ground' today it would be 4 years...so lets not get too excited.

I hate the cold and there is no escape from the cold at McMahon when it gets to freezing and your extremities start getting cold in the 2nd half of the game. Call me a wuss or whatever but I stopped going to late fall games because it's just not fun freezing at McMahon when I can watch the game in HD at room temperature.

The first public discussion of a new arena by Ken King and the Flames was back in 2006. There has been very little public disclosure on the progress of this project. Very different than how Katz and co. have done things

Would love to have more information, minus the bumbling and threats of moving

I would love a retractable-roof dome for the Stamps and a small (but expandable to MLS size) soccer-specific stadium to come with a new 20,000+ seat hockey arena... but that's such a pipe dream.

You've gotta think some way to try for an MLS team is in "Flaming C Sports and Entertainment's" future plans.
