The new Kalmah album, based on the song they released is looking a lot LOT better than the new Bodom album.

I really liked Relentless Reckless Forever, but before that they had 2 really weak albums. This is looking a lot like Blooddrunk which was pretty poor, but not on the Are You Dead Yet? level of bad.
Interesting...I thought Are You Dead Yet? was borderline masterpiece. CoB has definitely progressed and we probably won't hear the melodic awesomeness again like we did with Something Wild, Hatebreeder, Follow The Reaper, and HCD but I really loved Are You Dead Yet?

Wasn't a fan of Blooddrunk and thought Reckless was pretty good but not epic. I guess we'll have to wait and see on the new album.

Either way, they're always fun live. I like how often they come to Calgary.

Children of Bodom were one of the very first metal bands I got into, but then I abandoned them almost immediately after hearing a few others, specifically Kalmah.

I know post-2003 Children of Bodom is considered pretty bad and 'embarrassing' overall in the metal community, rightly or wrongly.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/...en_of_Bodom/22

1997 - Something Wild (85%)
1999 - Hatebreeder (79%)
2000 - Follow the Reaper (91%)
2003 - Hate Crew Deathroll (82%)
2005 - Are You Dead Yet? (58%)
2008 - Blooddrunk (57%)
2011 - Relentless Reckless Forever (60%)

That's a pretty significant change of generalized opinion.

I just blazed through Amarth's "Twilight of the Thunder God", and think I just may have to take a flyer on their new album when it comes out. It's quite simply music to conquer to...you can't help but want to invade a small nation and subjugate its citizens after blaring tunes like this.

Also, is anyone interested in the idea of a new Black Sabbath release? I'm not a huge fan, but I'll probably pick it up out of curiosity and intrigue, more than anything. I'd like to see how their stuff can stand up to metal in the modern day.

I tend to agree. I liked Relentless Reckless Forever a lot, maybe because the last 2 releases were so bad, but when I listen to Bodom I only really listen to 2 albums, Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper. HCD has a couple good songs and I like Something Wild though.

Kalmah has a much stronger line-up than Children of Bodom, even though after listening to 12 Gauge for 300th time I think it is their weakest album.

No. Metal bands never die.

It's actually a fun question to drop to people over beers.

"Q: Name five metal bands that have quit (and stayed that way)"

This can be pretty hard even for some serious metalheads. Generally only bands that someone else on the table has heard of are accepted. Also, needs to be a band with a record deal, no school-time bands.

Not sure if anyone's in to "post-metal" stuff, but I just bought Cult of Luna's release from earlier this year, "Vertikal". Dark, atmospheric stuff. A satisfying and twisted ride.

I guess As I Lay Dying will be looking for a new lead singer...

As I Lay Dying's Tim Lambesis charged with attempting to hire hit man

http://edition.cnn.com/2013/05/07/sh...html?hpt=en_c2

Quote:
The lead singer of the metal band As I Lay Dying was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempting to hire a hit man, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.
Authorities said Tim Lambesis tried to contract an undercover detective to kill his estranged wife. He is charged with solicitation of another to commit murder.

Slayer, the "Satanic" band, has zero memebers ever charged with trying to have someone killed. As I Lay Dying, the good old Christian band, has one. Hmmmm....

Well, obviously since I've thought of it I can come up with a whole bunch, but I won't spoil the fun by giving my list.

It can be quite hilarious when people really start getting desperate and try to come up with the most obscure, flavour-of-the-day bands that they can dig out of their memories of teenage years... Only to find out through a quick smartphone search that all of them are at the very least reunited, if they haven't been around all this time

Like Night Ranger. Or Cinderella. Or Stryper. Or Europe. Or Burzum, if you're that way inclined.

The Gathering
Strapping Young Lad

And I can't believe I didn't think of this one sooner
White Zombie

There, even got an extra one. I could name quite a few more bands, but keeping it to ones that people know is the tricky part

If we're counting bands that split due to a death:
Acid Bath, Bathory, Colosseum, and Dissection.

For those that just split up I can add Celtic Frost, and Demilich.

lol, Burzum came to my mind too but Varg kept releasing music from prison so he/the band never really went away. Black Metal bands would definitely fall under that obscure category with bands like Fimbulwinter. I can't name many outside that genre that weren't already listed. Damn. That is surprisingly hard.

Stormtroopers of Death (SOD)
Death
Superjoint Ritual is kind of obscure.
System of a Down put out Hypnotize in 2005 but continue to perform live so I guess they don't really count. Just trying hard here.
