Dumbass dispatcher should lose her job after being a complete idiot with her handling of this frantic 911 call:
What exactly did they do wrong? They asked relevant questions to get important information in a calm fashion. I assume you would've put on your cape and flown down there yourself?

Yup, the dispatchers in both 911 calls are doing exactly what they are supposed to do.

I thought they were supposed to keep the caller on the line until help arrives - it sounded to me as though the dispatcher tried to get off the phone more than once and ultimately did hang up before the police arrived.
I could be wrong, as I've never had to actually call 911 (knock on wood.....).

I'd imagine in a city like Cleveland that's not really feasible. High crime rates and lack of resources probably means that both the police and dispatchers are understaffed. It also likely explains the comment on sending a car when one comes available, this isn't a city with lots of cops just sitting around doing seatbelt stops.

It will be interesting to see how the media treats Mr. Ramsey. Will they interview the living daylights out of him because he's so entertaining, or will they try to ignore him as much as possible so they can exploit the underlying horrors of the girls' stories?
I can't recall a news story being simultaneously so horrible and so funny (the latter entirely due to Ramsey's character). I'm pretty sure the horrible part will take over as more details emerge though...
I still remember when the psychic hotlines were all the craze and JoJo bragged that she'd predicted the death of her bother in an accident. Clearly she didn't do anything about it, but she predicted it.

I can't imagine after being kidnapped for 10 years and the first phone call likely in 10 years was to a 911 dispatcher who told her "we will send a car as soon as one is made available". How comforting that must have felt. Telling a dispatcher you've been kidnapped for 10 years and they respond like someone called in a garage burglary.
Police arrested three brothers, ages 50, 52 and 54. Police did not release names.
But neighbors said one of them is the owner of the house, Ariel Castro, 52, a Cleveland school bus driver
Berry was the first to get out of the house, escaping through a broken door. A child came out behind her. Police then came and rescued the other two women, who were taken to the hospital. It wasn't immediately known who the child was.
"She was my best friend," Mitchell said.
A friend interrupted her, "She's alive. She is your best friend."
"You're right," Mitchell continued. "She is my best friend. I'm so nervous. I'm so excited. They won't let me inside. But I will stay here all night if I have to."

As someone who operates an emergency call centre, the statement is likely legally bound. Stating something more concrete or definitive can put the call centre at a liability.
It's not about callousness, it sounded like he was performing his job as he would be instructed to. 911 (and other emergency call centres) aren't hug boxes to shoot rainbows and placative statements at hurt persons, they are a conduit between the public and emergency services designed to deliver information between the two as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The most widely reported such incident in recent years was that of Jaycee Dugard, who was freed in 2009 after 18 years of captivity behind the home of a California couple.
Dugard released a statement Tuesday saying the women who broke free in Cleveland "need the opportunity to heal and connect back into the world.
"This isn't who they are. It is only what happened to them," Dugard said. "The human spirit is incredibly resilient. More than ever this reaffirms we should never give up hope."

Glad the girls are all ok, glad they have the skid marks in custody. Justice will be served.

In one of the top tweets about Ramsey, comedian Patton Oswalt wrote, "Dear Charles Ramsey: I am not a little pretty white girl, but I totally want to run into your black arms. #hero."
Hodge's restaurant in Cleveland posted a message on Facebook saying, "we're extremely proud of our employee Charles Ramsey for not turning his back on the young women. He's a true Cleveland hero. Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the women, their families and their friends."
Charles was just interviewed by the local NBC affiliate. This guy is awesome. Some choice quotes:
"I'm not a hero. I'm just an American and human. I heard a woman in distress and went to help, like anyone else would have."
"I got my entourage over here. Believe me, if we had known what was going on over there, the police never would have gotten a call. We would have taken care of that ourselves."
"I'm ok. If I could get my hands on this guy, then I'll be alright."
Gold.

So the dispatcher is supposed to freak out? How does the dispatcher even know this was legit? It could have easily been a prank. The dispatcher did exactly what they should have done, asked questions to get relevant information to both come to the aid of the caller and assist the investigation going forward.
Seriously, let's hear your proposed 911 dispatcher protocol seeing as you seem to have such an expert level understanding of how it should be done.
