Spot on. There shouldn't be a captain until one emerges. It would be a meaningless if you just stuck a C on someone's sweater right now.

My choice: None of the above. There's no established leader in the Flames locker room, at least from a fan's perspective, that really stands out and deserves the captaincy.
My guess: Giordano, then Backlund a few years from now.

I don't want either Glencross or Giordano as Captain. They were part of the last leadership group that failed us so horrifically. If Cammalleri gets an extension, and the organization felt a need to have a new captain, I'd prefer it go to him.
New blood. New Captain. I'd prefer we don't have a Captain next season - but instead do rotating Alternates just like last season, but with these guys:
Giordano - A
Glencross - A
Cammalleri - A
Brodie - A
Backlund - A
With the end goal being drafting a new C, and maintaining Backlund and Brodie as A's for a long long time.

I love how so many of you have this unique insight to the inner working of the Flames locker room. How can anyone say there isn't an established leader in a locker room in which you are not a part of? It's a simple question

If we don't pick a new captain, our captain will still be Jarome Iginla. Which would be really effing stupid, since that guy doesn't play for us anymore.

Matt Stajan. I think he'd be good.

I don't think we have an immediate need to appoint a new captain just yet. While a few have stepped up (Cammy, Backlund, Gio arguably) I don't think anyone has really separated themselves as the person that will lead this new core going forward.

Well this is a message board, we sort of discuss topics based on the information we have, which is never going to be the whole story. If you find discussion so unappealing perhaps you should just not look at threads that will obviously be based largely on opinion.

Stay tuned, there will be 4 more, and then a fifth when a guy is chosen, the consensus will be the selected guy sucks....

TJ Brodie? Funny no one suggested him- if your looking for someone long term, Brodie is certainly in the long term plans with the Flames. Young guy playing top D minutes- he would be my pick

I'm sorry, did I miss the underlined story? Sounds like speculation to me.
Are we talking about his time in Montreal or Tampa Bay? Source?

He's still finding his way in the NHL and is very young. I wouldn't want to give him the added pressure of being a leader until he is firmly established as a star player.

It's widely known that Tanguay requested a trade out of Calgary because of Mike Keenan.
Tanguay gave up and "quit" on his team in Tampa, he said so himself in an interview after he was re-aquired. Said he regretted it and that it was a mistake he learned from, but I wouldn't want him leading my team none the less

I've got two candidates:
Lee Stempniak. If you listen to the interviews, alot of the kids were talking about Stempniak and how he was a huge help in getting them adjusted to the NHL and the lifestyle. If we are going for a rebuild with a ton of youth, I think he should be considered.
Brian McGrattan. He showed he wants to be in Calgary and willing to defend our players. And seems like a decent guy off the ice. Maybe not as non-threatening as Iggy for community visits and kiddy sorts of deals, but he has the whole lead by example and love of the city going for him and the right passion on the ice.

If anyone cares, started a Be a Pro in NHL13 with the updated roster and Gio was made the captain.

Cammy would definitely get my vote. Him and Whirling Dervish. I wouldn't mind seeing Wideman get an A. Glencross is too much of a whiner, a captain needs to lead by example. As much as I love TJ, I think he's too young, but definitely in the future. The kid is a natural leader. Backlund is a good choice for the A as well.

Consummate professional on and off the ice. International resume. Future hall of famer. Nobody on the team has come close to showing the leadership and consistency. Even before him, Conroy left it on the ice and had a great all around game plus being media friendly and loyal to teammates.
Noone can touch Iggy and Cammalleri right now is the closest you come to Conroy in some attributes. Very tough call.

Iggy and Conroy I assume you mean? That Cammy is the closest?
