Yeah, the whole Lindholm over Monahan argument goes right out the window if theres a snowballs chance Barkov has a chance at donning a Flames Jersey.
Just an Opinion but Barkov>>>Linholm/Monahan.
All of my comments on the Lindholm vs. Monahan choice were all made in the knowledge that Barkov was as good as gone by the time the Flames made their pick.

The way things look with the rankings I see no need to move up into the top 5. It would likely be too expensive, and I really like the look of the players available 4-8 (any of which could on the board).
I would look into packaging something together to move the St Louis pick into the 10-20 range, especially if Ryan Pulock is still on the board. We'll come away like bandits if we come away with one of Barkov/Lindholm/Monahan & Pulock.

Can anyone find a good video longer than 3 minutes on Barkov? He doesn't impress me at all in all the videos I've watched of him. His goals look to be of the 3rd line grinder type.

This one is exactly 3:41 but is probably the 3 min vid you're referring to?
I think he looks very skilled. Some of those shoot out dangles are ridiculous (in many senses of the word) and I like that he seems to be heavily involved in all aspects of the play. Backchecking, setting up his linemates (Nemo the sniper!!) and burying some chances that require deceptively slick hand-eye coordination.
It's a testament to a good player that he makes things look easy.

He takes a lot of punishment to go into the dirty areas as well and tends to find open areas. His shot looks great too. The way he handles the physical element is impressive. At the beginning of the season, he had just turned 17... he's already 6'3" and there is a good chance that he still adds a little more. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years, he is playing at 6'4" and 230 lbs - the Finnish Lindros.
Okay, that last part might be me just playing up to the hype, but Lindros scored a lot of "grinder" goals (as the previous poster put it).

Lazar in the top 10 is a huge stretch to me. Otherwise I like that list.

To me it comes down to how prolific he would be in scoring those goals. You can still score a lot of goals in the NHL by grinding it out in the "hard areas". They all count the same.
But what really impresses me about Barkov is not only can he score the kinds of goals you're referring to, but it looks like he can make and finish the nice play as well.
I'd be pretty thrilled if he fell to 6.

Youtube clips will focus on goals but Barkov is a playmaker, despite the fact that he was 10th in the league in goals. The reason he's great is because he plays well all over the ice (6th in league in +/-) on top of being a top scorer at 17.
Intelligence is a tough thing to sell if you haven't watched him play. He's a safe pick because the way he plays the game is applicable in any league. He doesn't rely on tricks - he's just in the right place and he gets the puck to where it needs to go.
What you can see from his goals is that he knows where to put the puck when he gets the chance. A grinder goal is shoveling the puck towards the goalie and hoping for the best. Barkov has his head up. In shootouts, he never takes his eyes off the goalie.

I don't know if it has been mentioned yet but has anyone considered what would happen if the Oilers moved up in the draft ahead of us? I could certainly see that affecting our selection even more so it another team with additional picks does as well. I think it is important for the Flames to really be on top of this one or we could find ourselves on the outside looking in wondering what just happened.

Not sure why the Oilers moving ahead of us changes much.
It seems like they would have the interest in the same guys as those teams ahead us.
What exact player do you see them targeting that would hurt us by TB/Nashville/Carolina wouldn't?

We know the Oilers are quite unpredictable , but say if they were interested Monahan, two other teams have multiple first-round picks Columbus and Buffalo. I am suggesting if one or both of them were to move up in the draft we could find ourselves outside of picking Lindholm or Monahan. No saying it will happen but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

I think it's very likely Lazar is drafted in the top 10. Don't forget, Skinner was in the 30s according to CSS. I think, like Skinner, a lot of teams disagree with CSS on this one.
As for Barkov, Jari Kurri says that he's very much a Mikko Koivu type player.

Then we draft Barkov?

But then we take one of Mackinnon, Barkov, Drouin.

No matter who trades what the Flames pick sixth (unless the Flames move). If Lindholm and Monahan are both gone by 6 that would be sweet news for the Flames

Yea. Basically a can't lose draft based on what I read if you wind up with Jones, McKinnon, Drouin, Nurse, Lindholm, Nurse, or Monahan,.

I wouldn't call it sweet news, a nice prospect but if it isn't a center than it's somewhat sour.

The only non-centres the Flames could end up with out of the consensus top six are Jones and Drouin....if so, sign me up!

Kind of need to add Nichushkin to the discussion. He can go anywhere from 2-7 or later. Total wild card pick and a dimension that complicates the rankings.

Same here.
I'd more or less resigned myself to not landing Barkov, so I preferred Monahan. Also, there seems to be a lot of talk about moving up from the top 6 to top 4. We would have to offer Nashville something they could bite at, like if they wanted a defenceman or winger and they knew that they could get one by dropping down to 6th + Pit/St. Louis pick. It's a shame we don't have a second rounder. I still don't think they'll do it though because everyone knows how deep this draft is and every team may just take the best player available in the top 10.
But Barkov does look like a player with an immense amount of potential and higher ceiling than Monahan.
