the days of us only having one good young player are over with, and next year i expect johnny hockey to be where sven was this year.

which is why i don't mind trading the more nhl ready player in sven and waiting for gaudreau the following year.

if we some how walked out of new jersey with mackinnon plus lindholm it would be a draft coup of sedin like proportions

Hahaha... thank you for that.

While he may be more likely to do very well than bust, you do realize many top few picks have bust over the years right? But heck ya, let's trade away proven young talent for that one "best of the best" player, I mean it worked so well for us the last 20 years right?

I am not sold that Gaudreau will be where Sven currently is. Also, Backlund seemed to be turning the corner, we will see.

Brodie is good, but 50/50 he tops out as a good 3/4.

Jankowski is a complete wild card that I would not bet on either way at the moment. Next season is his chance to prove his selection.

If he stays only as good as he was this year, he is already a more than acceptable 3/4 Dman. At his age however he will improve for some time yet.

Agree with you on the rest.

Yeah, I like Brodie but I was thinking on a contender. He could easily be top 2 on the Flames in the next two seasons if his progression continues. It will be good for his development at the least.

didn't mean it with any animosity at all, it's just a sound drop from jim rome, and all i meant is that sometimes you gotta swing for the fences to hit a home run.

fwiw sven is the most important player in our system and i don't chronically under-value him. but mackinnon would be the new most important player and i feel he will be more valuable.

Would you do;
To Calgary Edmonton's first round pick at 7

To Edmonton St Louis's first round pick and Brossoit or Wideman

I'm not at all convinced that MacKinnon and Drouin are so far ahead of the other forwards that it's worth paying anything significant to move up the draft to get them. If you can move up a spot or two without giving up too much to ensure you get someone high on your list, then that's fine.

Edmonton's best move is to trade their pick for a D in the 24-27yr old range... I'm not sure which teams have one they'd be willing to move, though.

Of course as neither of those are core players going forward, Brossoit perhaps could be but that is years away from being proven one way or the other.

Absolutely 0 chance Edmonton does that deal even for Brossoit, Wideman and the pick.

This draft is being touted as deep... but I'm not hearing that Mac or Drouin or anyone is a Malkin or a Crosby or a Stamkos... so wouldn't the best way to take full advantage of this draft to have as many picks as possible???

It seems to me the Flames are sitting very well for this specific draft... I don't think trading up is a wise move... unless they're using a player and a pick to get a higher pick... meaning they'd still be left with the 3 in the first round.

If anything, I'd like to see players moved, with the PIT and STL picks to get them up into the middle of the round somewhere... but NOT looking to package both of them for a higher pick, thereby leaving the team with only 2 picks.

The more I read, the more I'm committed to the "All your 1sts are belong to us" train. I think this is a draft you want to get as many 1st rounders as possible, and not necessarily trade them away to move up. It would definitely be nice to get another one in that 10-15 range though....the problem is how you do you get another 1st rounder without doing something stupid.

At this point it would be wise to use those firsts to make all three picks. First round is too full of quality choices to not use them all.

Is it possible that they move one or both of those picks in a can't miss deal? Yeah.
But I think at this point it would really have to knock the socks off of Flames management for that to happen.

"Deep" can mean many things. It could mean a great top-10 and then normal after that. It could mean something else. Depends on where teams see the gaps in talent on their lists. If different teams have different views on that, then you can trade up without giving up too much.

And not just first round picks. If we could acquire a 2nd rounder or two it would give us more flexibility to move up or just continue to stockpile young players.
