I agree with posters who say no to using a 1st round pick on a goalie.
We do currently have 9 picks in this draft, so I'd expect another goalie to be drafted in rounds 3-7, but I really dislike the thought of using a 1st rounder on a goalie.

I went back 10 years and then to 2008 (gives plenty of time to see if guy has developed or not) and for the most part 1st round goalies develop as well or better than other first round picks. Not as many stars but starters for the most part.
Guys drafted 20 or later where Fucale would be: Rask, Varlamov, Irving, McCollum, Schnieder. Not a bad group with McCollum and Irving being the only duds and the other 3 being starters.
Overall of the 13 guys picked 1st round 13 guys, 5 duds, 2 stars, 4 starters and Bernier and Montoya who seem to fit somewhere inbetween.
Obviously more work could go into it but taking a quick glance at first round goalies it does seem your chances of getting a NHL player later in the round is at least as good as with forward/defense just not likely to get a star which can (rarely) happen with the skater.

Don't see him making it past 15th overall. Some reports have him rated as the best 2-way player in the draft (ahead of Monahan).

perhaps. There seems to be a fair amount of variability after the top 8 to 10 players.

I've seen that about Gauthier as well. I really do not think he will be on the board when the Flames come back up. If he is though, I would happily take him with our second pick and then look for D with our third.
I don't like the idea of trading next year's second round pick in order to move up*. I expect that second round pick will be one of the more valuable ones and even if next year's draft isn't as deep as this one, it would be nice to have our 2nd for a change. Moving our STL or PEN picks won't really have as much impact as moving our own first rounder up.
*Unless trading that 2014 2nd rounder gets us MacKinnon.

I've seen a few people mention this guy. Don't we have enough small guys already? Calgary needs to get bigger and stronger and another 5'9" guy isn't going to get us there. If we already had size, then ya, I like this guys skill and I might be tempted but there are enough good prospects with size at this draft.

If he is the BPA left on the board then we should draft him, doesn't matter if he's smaller.

The Flames have goaltender prospects in every possible age range so it would be a big disappointment to take a goaltender in the first three rounds of this draft. In the first place I think it's very dangerous to take goalies early.

Gauthier and Hartman would be good, but like others said Gauthier will probably get picked up by time we get to him.

NO GOALIES!
carry on...
Ideally, I would like to see a C, a D, and an RW with the 3 picks, but as long as that first pick is a C, and we get some size, I am not too worried about it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Petan and Subban fall somewhat significantly. I could see Petan falling to the mid/late 2nd and Subban to the mid/late 3rd.
Sort of like what happened to Weal before

Draft Pick

I think Santini is an good option for the Pittsburgh pick, especially if we get offence with the first 2 picks. This is what Mckeens had to say after the U18's.
"Named the tournament’s best defenseman .. Santini’s no nonsense approach, coupled with his physical brand of play, kept the opposition not only in check but off the scoreboard .. one of the most physically-imposing defensemen at the tournament despite going pointless, he recorded the highest +/- for his team (+8) second-highest in the tournament."

Would anyone be opposed to moving up on the St. Louis pick? We could have a shot at someone like Zadorov... wouldn't be bad to get a top-ranked defensemen in the system as well.
#22 overall pick and #30 overall pick (both approximated) to Phoenix for the #12 overall pick and the #42 overall pick?
Is that too little?

WHL Finals and Memorial Cup may just tell the story for Petan.
Has a good showing at those events and he could good anywhere from 15 to 30.
If he drops off as the competition gets tougher he could call a little as the size will become a bigger concern.

The problem with goalies though is that by the time they are ready to play, they are usually on their 2nd or 3rd teams. So the team that drafts them wastes a pick, wastes development time and dollars, and someone else usually gets to enjoy the benefits. Out of the 3 starters you listed, only Carrot Top is still playing for his team. I'm sure if you go around the league, most starters were drafted by someone else.
Goalies aren't worth any 1st round pick ever imo. I wouldn't pick one with a 2nd either. It's a total crapshoot and anybody who thinks they can predict who will be a star is a liar. Rinne was in the 8th, Lundquist in the 7th, Kipper in the 5th. Niemmi wasn't even drafted. Even the best goalies of all time weren't top picks. Roy was in the 3rd round. Hasek was in the 10th. Brodeur was picked over Kidd.
The point is not that you can't find a great goalie in the 1st round. The point is that it's a total crapshoot, and even the experts can't seem to figure it out. It's just hard to know how a guy will be playing 5-6 years down the line.
Say no to goalies in the 1st round. This year and forever.

No goalies in the 1st round please. I think the organizational need for skilled forwards exceeds that of additional goalie prospects.
Looks like will be some very good players remaining mid-late 1st round. Really looking forward to this draft.

I could see them trading one of these picks for a couple second rounders. I hope they try and make that happen as there always seems to be decent players that slide to the second round. That and of course we don't have any second rounders, and it would be nice to get a couple back.
