During TSN's "Insider Trading" segment Tuesday, Darren Dreger reported that the league will begin a stadium series next season featuring six outdoor games, starting with the Jan. 1, 2014, Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium. The other five match-ups will be:
• Ducks vs. Kings at Dodger Stadium, Jan. 25
• Devils vs. Rangers at Yankee Stadium, Jan. 26
• Islanders vs. Rangers at Yankee Stadium, Jan 29
• Penguins at Blackhawks, Soldier Field, March 1
• Senators at Canucks, BC Place, March 2

This is a freaking terrible, terrible, terrible idea. The Winter Classic is fantastic because it dominates the sports conversation for a single weekend, and shines a huge light on hockey. Spreading out games like this massively dilutes the Winter Classic brand.

Professional sports has always been about money but more and more it seems to be less about "sport" and just a cash grab. Thus this is an almost logical growth of another grab the bucks while you can type of short term thinking.

Think the NHL recognizes that the novelty is wearing off a little, and that this event truly is just a fun spectator event.

No reason why the Jan. 1st game still can't be the national showcase that is a fun new years day event to watch, while the other games are more targeted towards the local audience.

I actually really like the though of an outdoor game in the same city as the Super Bowl during Super Bowl week. Makes for a sweet sports trip (if you have lots of cash).

There are 35 college bowl games and those and football is still popular.

Americans love one off/spectacle sporting events.

This is obviously the League's attempt to please the sponsors & broadcasters that lost out on 1/2 a season of NHL hockey, but it'll be good cinema.

I'm a UFC fan. My interest has definitely decreased due to so many cards

I went a stretch of years without missing a single PPV. Now I miss about 3 a year and rarely watch the free TV ones

Healy was going on about the Rangers being pissed off. I guess both of their games are road games so they don't get any gate revenue, and they aren't interested in playing two outdoor games within a few days. I think he very well could be right, it would make sense for them to be upset about it.

The way these work (or at least how the Heritage Classic worked here) is that the league basically buys a sellout from the home team, then sells all the tickets to the game as a separate event, with the revenue going into the general league-wide revenue.

For the home team, the specific revenue they receive from ticket sales is exactly the same as if they had been playing in their home arena and sold out the game.

The Rangers typically play in front of capacity crowds, but the Devils and Islanders do not. It makes a lot more sense for those games to be on the schedule as Rangers road games. It's probably also a lot cheaper for the League to buy the games from the Devils and Islanders than the Rangers, so it means more money into league-wide HRR.

The Rangers being the marquee team have geographic rivalries with both opponents. With one game, who do you sleight? And since the rink is built, the thinking is likely why not satisfy both?

And given the above post, crafty move by the league.

Both Jankowski and Gaudreau will be playing outdoor college games next season at Fenway Park, January 4th

On Saturday, January 4, 2014, Merrimack College will face Providence, followed by Notre Dame against Boston College.

On Saturday, January 11, UMass Lowell will play Northeastern University, followed by University of Maine against Boston University.
