It looks like they're trying to impale the Queen's head on the Parliament building like a head on a spike.

Is this some sort of warning to future monarchs?

hopefully when she does pass on the government takes the opportunity to choose a new figure for the $20 and the coins. but we'll probably be stuck with Charlie

Apparently the new coins are giving vending machines quite a bit of trouble (even though the government said they shouldn't).

Seems like every time we change our money, business got to invest more time or money just to adapt.

Ottawa may be saving money with the new loonies and toonies, but the Toronto Parking Authority says it will cost more than C$1 million to recalibrate the city’s 3,000 parking meters, about C$345 per machine. And Calgary says it’s budgeted over C$30,000 to convert its meters.

Vending-machine operators, not surprisingly, are not pleased, either.

The Canada Gazette, the government’s official newsletter, estimated earlier this year that it’ll cost the vending industry C$40 million to recalibrate what it calls “coin-acceptance equipment.” Canadian media are already carrying reports of vending-machine abuse as the new coins keep returning to the slot at the bottom of machines.

Today Chris Hadfield helped reveal the $5 and $10 banknotes from space:

I think they are very well done. I'm looking forward to seeing them in November.

Those are both pretty cool. Much cooler than a picture of a duck.

Larger version of the $10 (from the Bank of Canada Flickr account, which also has the high-res images of the $5 and front of the $10):

I'm a little disappointed that they use the modern VIA rail route as opposed to the original CPR route (i.e. Edmonton instead of Calgary), but it's a cool picture.

I think this $5 is a little bland compared to the 10.

The mountains extending through the background looks better than
the plainness of empty space with a few stars IMO.

Agreed.. I know they don't want to make a black bill but devoid, blue sky 'space' leaves a little to be be desired.

Love the 10's though. I hope they print lots! I always seem to get two 5's instead of a ten Really puts a damper on my day, hehe

Maybe they should have included some spaceships, nebula, Halley's Comet and some random Aliens (Like Roger, Alf and a couple Grays) on the $5.

Blame the ATMs. The $10 bill has the lowest circulation of all the Canadian bills.

In fact, according to this: http://www.cbc.ca/news/interactives/...lscirculation/, in 2006, there were more $1 and $2 bills "in circulation" than $10s, even though the Bank of Canada hasn't printed a $2 bill since 1996, or a $1 since the late 80s.

A+ on both of those. Looking forward to seeing them in the wild.

Still annoying how the new bills stick together though...

Yeah, I really like them. Don't know about all the negative comments from the focus groups.

Course, as has been mentioned, the people that get picked for these groups are generally losers who have nothing to do during the busiest part of the day.

A lot like CP!

Agreed. Though it does seem that after being in circulation for a short time that really lessens.

Anybody know where I could get my hands on some uncirculated bills of the current $5 and $10s?

Do banks have access to uncirculated banknotes? My local RBC branch gets their bills dispensed from a machine behind the wicket counters.
