What's the deal with Culkin anyways?
Is he going to play another year of junior hockey?
I know we just drafted him last year, but I thought I read somewhere that he is old enough to be eligible for the AHL next season?

He is eligible to play in the AHL. I guess we'll see. He'll have to be signed to an NHL deal this offseason then.

Yeah, I don't believe we have to sign Culkin for another year, so his immediate future should be decided at training camp. Return to junior as an overager, sign a one year minor pro contract? or sign a NHL contract.
He only has 3 years of junior so my guess is he'll go back there.

Ortio started today against Russia in a 2-1 shootout loss. One allowed goal sounds pretty good to me. He's started the first two games in the tournament. Don't know who will play tomorrow against Sweden.
Raanta will join the team and Rinne has declined. They're giving Ortio a long look it seems. It would be amazing if he made the team even if it's just as the third goalie, since the world championships are a great experience especially for young players.

I assume some of you locals have gotten a good look at Brossiet with the WHL playoffs. He's got some shiny stats in the playoffs. Has his played matched the stats?

Yes. The nerves he showed at the Memorial Cup and the Super Series haven't shown up yet.

Feaster said in his talk today that Ortio is ready to be the #1 in Abbotsford next season. It's good to hear as management has been quiet on this player and I was wondering if he was still in their plans.

Maybe it shouldn't surprise me, but it caught me a little off guard when he said that. I was fully expecting Ortio to spend the year in Finland, but I'm not going to complain. I'll love watching an Ortio/Brossoit tandem if that's how they want to go. I personally don't like that idea because to have success in the AHL, you need a veteran goalie as a backup at least.
I think the goalie situation is easily the most interesting thing about this team come training camp. I'm looking forward to it.

I didn't know where to put this, but it had to be put somewhere. I have no reason to live anymore after seeing this save by Drew MacIntyre. Hockey will no longer bring me pleasure anymore after seeing this:

I'm dreaming of a kid like Brossoit coming in with swagger and stealing the NHL starting job. He's big enough, and I think he's got potential. It's a long shot, 50-to-1, but hey, he could be the next Carey Price.
That's the direction change our squad needs.

I see Bera and Ortio in Abbotsford with Brossoit in Utah.

I never trust a lawyer. So when I hear "is good enough to be the Starter in Abbotsford" or "is ready to be the starter in Abbotsford" (the latter is actually what I remember hearing during the presser but I have been known to be wrong before) I think why not just say he will be the starter? That answer? Because he will in Finland. Where if he has another great year he will be one of the best goalies outside of the NHL.
But that's just me, but I might pick at his words because he is a lawyer. But then again I was right about Cervenka and him not being used as a center this year simply because of the wording Feaster used.

Yeah, I don't see any guarantee that Ortio will be the starter or even playing for the Heat but that is probably the plan if Kipper doesn't return and if Ortio plays well enough and if no other goalies are signed. I hope they do better planing than they did with Baerstchi's position.
And yeah there was some questioning that Cervenka wasn't a centre long before training camp.

even without Kipper the goalies will be set IMO. Ramo/Mac and Yogi/Brossoit

Ortio (possibly) coming over again next year sure sets up a massive goaltending battle next season, and not just for the Flames, but the Heat as well.
1. Joey MacDonald (33)
2. Karri Ramo (26) - yet to be signed
3. Reto Berra (26)
4. Joni Ortio (22)
5. Laurent Brossoit (20)
5 goalies and only 4 spots, unless they decide to run with a "three headed goalie monster" on one of the rosters.
Kipper must be retiring, as expected, and I really don't see any way that Brust, Taylor or Irving remain with the organization.

If Kipper does decide to come back, I think he should have to compete for a job like every other goalie.

Word is that Ortio and Raanta will be the playing goalies. Whoever plays best will end up being the number one.
Finland doesn't have a very good team on paper though. Lots of players have declined.

Shutout and first star. Oil Kings move on to the WHL Finals against Wotherspoon and the Winterhawks.
