No way he was getting less than Kisio. Kisio IIRC signed a 2 year, $1m total contract.
Nieuwendyk turned down a 3 year, $6m offer from the Flames, after getting $1.85m awarded in arbitration that year (according to wiki)...and ended up signing not much more per year ($11m over 5 years, so $2.2 per year) with Dallas.

Agreed, but knowing that there are two sides to every story. He has no place in this org IMO unless he earns it.
So far, his GM skills seem to suck. Does not merit the job here.
Give Feaster another year, if it doesn't work out get the best guy available. IMO

I agree. I just don't understand the hate on Nieuwendyk here when he demanded a better contract. Gilmour and MacInnis left with the same reason and people are willing to forgive those guys. It was business and at that time if management took care of those 3 with the better contract, they wouldn't have demanded a trade.

Nieuwendyk and Gilmour had existing contracts when the former held out and the latter left the team during the season. Macinnis rights were traded to St.Louis but honored his contract and did not hold out or walk out on the Flames. Big difference.

some people are just too single minded. they get it in their head that things like bringing someone back are bad, trades with the Leafs are bad, players from bad teams are bad. It's kind of ridiculous.
Personally I would welcome back any former player that could still contribute, that would be an asset to this franchise and who's departure was amicable.

I didn't know what they were offering, but my understanding was that at the time of his holdout, he was getting paid less than Kisio, and the offers didn't sweeten until well after he held out. The Flames may have come back with an offer as described in Wikipedia, but by that time I suspect the the bridges had been burned.

The Nieuwendyk and Gilmour negotiations were acrimonious and the offers/arbitrations were undervaluing the players.
You're right about MacInnis being an entirely different situation, but I include him as another example of the Flames being penny wise and pound foolish with their top end talent. They claimed they couldn't afford the contract that St Louis ended upgivin MacInnis, but it really wasnt that high, and they had already dumped Suter in order to keep MacInnis. Within a year or so the contract MacInnis got from St. Louis would have been deemed a bargain for a franchise defenseman.

MacInnis actually signed an RFA deal with the Blues, then the two sides negotiated the trade to cover the compensation. But yes, he was a free agent, while Nieuwendyk and Gilmour reneged on valid contracts. 20 years on, I bear no animosity toward Nieuwendyk, but I also don't think honouring him is all that important. He is the type of player that the "Forever a Flame" thing is aimed at though. They can give him an honour without sullying the retired numbers.

I agree re. Nieuwendyk.
My point with MacInnis was that the Flames had the option of matching the Blues offer. It would have made MacInnis the highest paid Flame in team history, but within the term of the contract would have been seen to have been a bargain.
