With three Stanley Cup rings, Nieuwy should have no trouble finding work

If this is true, then i have no idea what the flames owners are thinking?

First they don't go after Davidson and now it looks like they let Nill slip through their fingers. They seemed engrossed in the incompetence of Feaster and KK's hockey knowledge.

I am sure some posters will say we have no idea if either was interviewed, but i have very high doubts that either was considered.

Status quo for a management team that produced the worst season in flames history sounds about right.

We will see if Nill is any good in Dallas. Button was highly regarded when he came to the Flames and we know how that ended.

You could say that about any GM. Feaster was not highly regarded when he took over and i highly doubt he is highly regarded now. The retired chimp from tsn would be an upgrade at this point.

Hopefully Feaster doesn't go all Brian Burke on you.

Can't do worse than Nieuwendyk who was clearly in over his head.

I was going to suggest the same thing. I bet he would be an upgrade. I am actually really disappointed that Flames didn't pursue Jim Nill.

Aren't you being a little kind here? Flames owners may not be as as dumb as the clown up north but since Fletcher left the organization Flames ownership group IMO has to be considered amongst the worst in the league when it comes to finding the proper people to run their business. They/King got lucky with Darryl Sutter but that's the only bright spot in over 20 years of poor ownership decisions. I personally believe Feaster/King are a total joke and have nothing on Bremner, Coats, Button and any of the other mediocre hires the owners have saddled the organization with.

It does seem like the ownership is intent on letting Feaster prove he shouldn't be a GM rather than learn from the close calls.

Looks like a great move by Dallas... Have no idea if the Flames seriously approached Nill, but the Stars aren't in any better shape than Calgary...too bad, but I am getting used to disappointment with this organization...

People get far too sad when unproven execs go on to other places. Nill maybe fantastic, who knows, but I remember the saddness around these parts that the Flames missed out on the unstoppable Nicholson / Yzerman tandum a few years back. All based around the fact that Yzerman was a good hockey player and Nicholson was Hockey Canada president and we'd just won a gold medal at the Olympics.

Assembling Canada's Olympic team is not a difficult task. People really have no idea if Nill or Yzerman would be any good at their GM jobs. Yzerman has proven to be average at best, we should stop getting sad about things we don't really have reference points for.

Well, garbage bag day is tomorrow, then the week of internal meetings, so let's not lose hope yet that within the next days and (sooner the better) weeks, there may be the fundamental change that a team that's in transition, needs to make to move forward.

Feaster got a lot of the ELC and other signings out of the way in the last weeks of the season, morseo than most seasons, when those were done in the offseason IIRC. The focus will be on the draft two months from now, amnesty buyouts, and UFA season July 5th.

With all the other changes already done, wipe the slate as clean as possible from top to bottom. With the biggest organizational decisions since the Flames became a "have" team circa 05-06 lying in the balance, with 3 first round picks, cap space, amnesty buyouts, the guys in charge should be the ones that are committed to for the next 3-5 years. I just can't see the current GM and coach, given for the reasons, instructions and mandates they were brought in under, fulfilling that. Nevermind the performance under both, especially with the comments and actions Feaster's made that have put this organization under the microscope unnecessarily. Unfair? Sure. But giving them another half-assed 1 year to see how it goes, would be fatal. The decisions on draft picks, direction, how to spend cap space etc etc happen in the next few months, not in 13-16 months.

There are some good people, and people like the scouts and some of the hockey ops, that should be retained. But at job positions where the buck stops, that being, coach, GM, and President, IMO, there needs to be change.. KK move up, JF and BH, move on with their buyout from the Flames. Hire a strong personality to run things from top to bottom, to pick the coach and make the decision on their vision for the team the next 5 years through the draft, FA, and beyond.

Most importantly, one who will not consider "collaboration" (don't call it meddling) with the ownership group leader and President as smart hockey operations decision making.

Bottom line, if the team is going to dump a HOF'er, have another retire, and dump a premiere defenseman, don't stop there with the changes, this unique season and offseason moreso than ever.

The building has been full for over 90% of King's tenure and you were one of the Posters that wanted D. Sutter out of the position more than anybody.

Has anybody here really sat down and thought of what these guys do in their meetings?

In my opinion it works like this:
1. Murry Edwards (Owner): Major decisions (trading Iggy/trading Kipper/New Building/Sportchek Zone/New Jerseys) are presented to him and he asks questions related to the reasoning behind them, before signing off.

2. Ken King (President): Resides over teams that run Hockey Operations (Feaster/Weisbrod), MultiMedia (Radio/Telivision/Web Prescence), Ticketing, Concenssions, Negotiations with all of the above, as well as any deals with the Hitman/Stampeders...probably has to sign off on HR decisions, listens to people that handle the accounting, currency trading and whatever other logistics go on.

3. Jay Feaster (GM): In charge the obvious (trades/on ice personnel moves and setting the direction of the team), gives direction to teams that Scout (NHL, each major region both international and domestic), has a relationship with the coaching staff (each affiliate: NHL, AHL, ECHL...etc, etc), cap management, logistics of schedule (travel/bookings)

4. Weisbrod (Assistant GM): Todd Button would be a direct report, as well as anyone in our video analysis team, statistics team (PUCKS) and he would have a working relationship with the scouts/coaching staffs. He would be in charge of our general direction on personal decisions and would be responsible for coming up with the "ideas" that lead to those decisions as well as managing the ideas of his underlings.

5. Todd Button (Head Scout): Responsible for direction on player picking criteria, filtering those decisions to higher ups (Weisbrod/Feaster...could be asked direct questions by the Owner/President as well during presentations) and in general would work with Weisbrod.

As far as I can tell Edwards/King are on the receiving end of information...they aren't the ones generating the ideas. You can be mad that they aren't hiring people that generate better ideas, but from the sounds of your posts you lay blame at their feet for on ice personnel decisions.

My questions is why fire King who's done a pretty good job? The building is full...the team is in the black financially, we don't have huge PR issues (that aren't related to on ice performance) and I can watch all 82games a season (plus preseason) on TV/listen on the radio. What more do you want from the guy?

If you want to replace Joe you must clean house in the scouting department because they were his voice of reason in many trades .
