Based on the next sentence, I think he meant they would waive him.
Which would be a brilliant move. "We can't get what we want for Luongo, so we'll just get nothing for him instead."

I don't think they go after Iginla but for arguments sake
Sedin/Sedin/Kesler/Burrows/Higgins/Hansen/Kassian
27m
Edler/Hamhuis/Bieksa/Garrison
18.7
Schnieder
4
total
49.7 leaving 14.3 to fill 6 forwards, 3 d, and a goalie
add in likely salaries and ELC contracts
Tanev 1.2
Corrado 0.6
7th d man 0.8
backup goalie 1.0
so now we have 53.3, leaving 10.7m
I assume the 4th line will be similar to this years with guys like Wiese/Pinnazato/Lapierre/Sestito
so 4 x 0.6 is 2.4
55.7 leaving 8.3m to sign 3 forwards
Add in Jensen on an 0.8 ELC and now 7.5 to sign 2 forwards
obviously that assumes Ballard/Booth/Luongo leave with no salary commitments coming back but it's not unfathomable that happens

yep that's what I meant, I don't think it comes to that but buying out that contract makes no sense

a player can technically be released, but it requires the player to breach their contract. If the Canucks waived Luongo and demoted him (which they can because he has a NTC and not a NMC), then Luongo refused to report, at that point the Canucks could void the contract.
Redden was obviously willing to report to the AHL so the Rangers had no grounds to void the contract. I think Gomez too would report, so the Habs wouldn't be able to either.
Luongo however I think would refuse to report.

Thought i would open this can of worms for ***** and giggles:
If Luongo is put on waivers do you think the flames should put in a claim?
I would rather the flames do a slow and proper rebuild but i doubt they do that. If they are going to cut corners and rush it, they might as well pick up a #1 in Luongo. Brossoit and Gillies are 3-5 years away from being starters.
Granted i think Florida would jump at the chance before it got to the flames.

I honestly don't think anyone would take Luongo off of waivers. There are other goalies available that are as good, and don't come with a $5.3 million cap hit until 2022.

No they should not.
Signing Luongo would just mask issues with this team and put them in the same 8th-12th boat we have been in the last 3-4 years and stunt the rebuild that would be needed once he retires/falls off in play.
Signing Luongo would just be another extension of maintaining the mediocrity that has been holding this team back lately.

which ones?
because Jimmy Howard who is nowhere near as good is signed for the same dollar amount until 2020 I believe
his cap hit is a value for his talent, and with the way the CBA works now there's no punishment to a new team if he retires early, and those last few seasons he could easily be traded to a cap floor team because his salary is below 3m

Basically the same math as mine. Best case scenario, the Canucks will have less depth than last year in all positions, on a team that has already started its downward trend. Why would Iggy want to sign there?

Which goalies are as good and available?
If teams wouldn't take Luongo on waivers then there are a lot of terrible GM's out there that are doing a piss poor job of managing their teams.
Luongo is an upgrade on at least 15 teams goalies right now and at least 5-6 of those teams make sense to grab him even with the big ticket.

The thing is, any team that takes Luongo is pretty much setting themselves to have to buy him out or bury him in the minors before the deal is up. He might be OK for a few more years, but not until he is 42.

that roster is really only losing Raymond, Booth (injured all year), and some 6th d men
and they would still have 7-8m to sign 2 forwards
how is it worse than this years?
from an aging standpoint I could at least understand an argument, but not a depth one

For UFAs: Mike Smith, Ray Emery, Backstrom.
Trades will be available where the acquistion cost will be more palletable than Luongo's term.

Getting rid of players and putting in lesser players to fill the holes? Players aging? No booth and Ballard - even if they aren't living up to contracts they are still depth. Lesser quality backup goalie?

Emery isn't close to as good, Smith has questions about what he can/has done without Phoenix system in front of him and Backstrom at this point is not as good.

I agree with everything you posted. I personally don't see the flames having the patience to do a proper rebuild. I could see the flames going with Ramo this year but if he fails, i don't see them waiting 3-4 years for Gillies ect. to be ready for the starting job. More than likely i see them going after a #1 goaltender with picks or prospects next summer.
So basically are they better off taking Luongo for free this year or trading picks and prospects for a goaltender next year?
My answer is hope to god that Ramo can be somewhat competent in net for the next 3-4 years. I really don't have much faith on the 2 "best goaltenders outside the NHL".

Or have him retire when the real dollars drop down and he doesn't have a desire to keep going at 37+.
Also for teams like Florida, NYI, Phoenix, TB, NJ who all should have interest in him cap hit shouldn't really matter that much as they are doubtful to ever be close to top of the cap.

I doubt he plays until he is 42. If he plays until he is 40 i see no reason why a team would buy him out. Loungo is still a very good goalie and has many years left in him.

What about a Canucks trade at the draft? One my close friends is a mega Canucks fan and that's is prediction. He won't get a great return (no blue chip prospects) but better than nothing! Makes sense and creates space for the cap for signings in the summer. Although I hope they get screwed and have to keep him.

that's what most people seem to think happens
these contracts have been moved in the past and it was at the draft
