Would TSN be any better?
I don't think there is the market for 2 purely sports stations, and with Fan960 being the Flames rights holder for a long, long time I don't think TSN will even try.

In a bizzare way I actually believe it would be good entertainment to see them opposite each other. I know I would tune in for it.

I've listened to Rome when I can since he was tape delayed and on at night on 660. He's definitely not for everyone and an acquired taste, but I am sad to see his last hour getting chopped. That is going to SUCK for the Smackoff and Hackoff.

I know it's fashionable for some here to hate on Jim Rome but the fact is he puts on a good show and has a massive audience that tunes in daily on hundreds of radio stations over North America. Not everyone wants to hear hockey 24/7 and I enjoy that his show breaks up the Fan's nearly 100% focus on the Flames. Listening to his show keeps me up to date on sports I don't get a chance to watch or don't care to like the NBA, Golf, College Sports, boxing, etc.

OK. They are owned by Bell and carried on their TV service. So what?

I guess him talking about his race horses for 3 hours counts as other sports but not sure people are getting much value from it.
I used to enjoy Rome but he is way to much about his schtick and kissing up to athletes now for my liking. Espn and other guys do such a better job that satellite or podcasts will get my ear when his show is on.

Seriously, does anyone know what happened to Rick Lafitt? Was he abducted by aliens? He just vanished.
I thought he was an asset to the station.

Yes, another hour of NHL coverage on the Fan!
So, we now have non-stop NHL coverage from 6am-10am, 12pm-6pm, and 7pm-10pm! I can't believe they actually put those other shows on at 10am and 6pm where they actually talk about other sports- who wants that?

Rick's main role was to provide the 20/20 updates for both the Fan and 660. Now they have one of the 660 staff members handle sports updates for 660News and the Fan960 host (Steinberg or Leslie) do their own updates.

Not overly happy with this move.
As mentioned above, non-stop hockey just as we're moving into a hockey deadzone (as far as Flames go). Get some freaking diversity.

I'm all for diversity but not in the form of the Jim Rome show....just so painful to listen to. I can feel my IQ drop by 20 points just by listening to it.

Meh, I can see not appreciating some of Rome's humor or clone takes, etc. The show certainly has a certain immature aspect to it that I happen to love but is not for everyone.
However, as a person who has listened to Rome since the 660 cfr days being played after flames game coverage, I firmly believe that Rome has the most consistent intelligent and well thought out sports takes of anyone out there. On top of that, his interview skills are second to none. Interviews you here from local FAN guys and the Hockey Central crew range between boring and excruciating.
Rome gets the best guests, researches and prepares, then he actually LISTENS to what the people say and takes his line of questioning with it. Very few people have a talent for this, but he certainly does and it has become a part of his reputation over the last 15 years.
ALSO, Rome talks hockey and gets great hockey interviews at this time of year. He is also very knowledgeable and loves playoff hockey. You could learn more about whats going on in hockey in the two segments Rome will dedicate to it than an entire weeks worth of Millar and Maclean gum flapping.

Uh no. Rome likes hockey, but I would never say he knows that much about it. Casual knowledge at best.

Fair enough, I do agree with you to a degree, but he brings a unique perspective when he does talk about it that is refreshing. It seems whenever he talks hockey, he is making a case for it because he knows many listeners don't like it. He is absolutely fascinated about things that I sometimes take for granted, such as the pace of the game and the attrition that is hockey playoffs. When he frames this with his high degree of knowledge in other sports, it shines a different light on the game.
He does get very solid and consistent hockey interviews during playoff season as well, and his perspectives spill into those. Gretzky (big Rome guy) used to come in a couple times during the playoffs for primers of different series'. Donald S. has been on consistently, and even predicted at the beginning of the 06 season that Anaheim would beat Ottawa for the cup (then spent a year talking about it). Yzerman, Getzlaf, Toews... Even Iggy was on leading up to the Salt Lake Olympics.
I could easily listen to Rome talk hockey. Whereas with the hockey central crew, it is pretty much just a dumber, louder, more watered down version of the topics discussed on this forum.

I guess everyone has their own opinion but I would disagree with most of that.
There is little to no sports information on the show other than the occasional update to "pimp" his next guest. He doesn't provide insight into what happened/might happen and he doesn't bring on guest to provide insight/expert opinion.
His interviews are horrible because he spends way too much time sucking up to his guests, having them repeat boring stories that they have told 200 times and gets way too many boring athletes that never have anything to say.
I get if people like the nature of the show and that perhaps his bits are meant for a different audience than myself but the show is terrible at providing sports info and the interviews/guests make the show borderline unlistenable.
