In a non cap world, I agree. However, part that is the most important is the value you get out of entry level contracts. If you're paying a 22 year old 6 million, or a 31 year old ufa 6 million, what's the difference other than the 22 year old will cost you an arm and a leg?
We don't have a ton of assets, so wasting them in acquiring a young RFA guy is somewhat poor asset management. If you keep the picks and fill the spot you're trying to fill with a stop gap (Filppula or Bozak) instead, you'll be further ahead once those picks develop, as you'll have a veteran asset to trade and the young guys coming in.
