Nenshi backs DCU, saying that allegations she is bought and paid for are false. DCU reveals a meeting between herself and a rep from the Manning Institute, where they threatened to run candidates against her and also told her she was not conservative enough for them. Nenshi calls out Manning institute for this type of unethical partisan politics. Calls out Manning himself, wondering why someone who is held in such regard has his name attached to a shady political operation. Nenshi claims they are using intimidating tactics and that it pushes the grey area of the law. Nenshi and DCU present united front.

This whole thing might have the unexpected side-effect of making all of the existing city council more united and less willing to negotiate with the spokes-organizations for the development industry. Even those who are traditionally pro-developer might be even more cautious about being seen as 'bought and paid for'.

I think that this is the fiddle that Nenshi is trying to play right now. It may be some brilliant politicin'... He fully backs Diane here, giving her quite a bit of support. The other way he could have played this would have been to disparage those mentioned by name by Wenzel. In doing so, he may have been able to remove some obstacles in his council. Instead, by backing them and helping to repair reputations, he may have made his team a little more united. Also, he is the one who convinced her to go public with the Manning Institute Rep. I believe that is what was said, anyway.
He is creating an us against you mentality, which is a great way to lead a team. The you, in this case is Manning Institute backers, ie. Wenzel and some other developer types. Great way to push an agenda if you're Mayor. As has been mentioned repeatedly, a Mayor is nothing without council votes. This video leak could be just the thing that gets Nenshi his.

I'm no DCU fan (very much the opposite), but I must give her credit on this one.
Good leadership skills showed by both Nenshi and DCU here.
Keating has responded as well via his blog http://shanekeating.blogspot.ca/
The silence from Peter Demong is deafening.
In the end, it looks like one of the main outcomes of this thing will see a certain faction of suburban developers/homebuilders be seen as the bad guys. Probably not a bad outcome for the city overall and is what should be happening anyway.

Yep. At least through the next council cycle. Score one for Nenshi.

@nenshi: .@sunrickbell I truly love that you yourself set up the "smoking gun" and now are sad there isn't one. One way of telling a story.

I'm going to take some issue with a couple things in your post here.

This doesn't seem to jive with you trotting out the "$500M tunnel" line that was soundly debunked back before the last municipal election, and being ignorant to the need for the tunnel. Also the implication of the "250 sqft apartment vs. big house with a yard" false dichotomy.

Portland is a trendsetting and resounding success for its city-type (small North-American city not located in the northeast, i.e. has done most of its growing in the post-war automobile-dominated era).
