Tall people crammed into planes are payback for people 5'10" and under being stuck behind you at a concert, sporting event etc.

No worries, just bring a tablet. Westjets in flight system is super ghetto anyway.
+1. Most airline systems are crap and/or have a dismal selection.
And all airlines charge for the exit row. But the last time I flew on a WestJet 737, I didn't preselect my seat in advance, and I got an exit row seat for free. That was last year, maybe it's changed now.
In the spirit of creating new threads - I need to get something off my chest. Maybe should be a GMG entry, but whatever.
Want to know why Westjet flight attendants are always so happy? Because they aren't sitting in your seat with your knees crammed into your chest.
This airline has decided to run itself right into the toilet. I will not be flying with them by choice again (have to for work).
This is the 3rd time that I have found myself aboard one of their aircrafts with their new "seating structure". As someone who is 6'4, I cannot physically sit in a normal sitting position while in one of their regular seats. I have to turn my legs outward because there is not enough room. If the girl infront of me during the flight had decided to put her seat back, I would've had to c*nt punt someone.
It wouldn't be so amazingly terrible if I could actually select an exit row seat - but no, they now have an additional charge for the privledge of sitting in the exit row, as well as their first 4 rows of "normal class". They are charging money for the GD exit row. I can't believe it.
For those of you who have not sat in the first 4 rows of a Westjet plane yet, you probably have, but you just don't remember it. It was about 15 years ago when airlines actually gave you that much legroom / seat room normally.
Add in to the fact that their inflight entertainment system is terrible / usually out of service.
Don't fly this airline if you have a choice. Fly Air Canada (I never thought I would say these words).
First of all, Air Canada is far worse than Westjet. You clearly haven't flown with them in a while.
Virgin America does nearly all of these things and they are still by far the best airline in the U.S. at the moment. I think you're just going to have to accept that ALL airlines that are in very competitive markets are doing these things. There's no way around it. It's becoming the industry standard because they are trying to make money in an ever decreasing air travel business due to recession. Get over it.

It did change and that was my point.
They also reduced each row by 2 inches of leg room to make room for their first 4 rows of "premium seating".
Which airline is better really depends on how much you fly. A few of the guys at work are AC Super Elite and they end up flying first class for free on almost every flight. I wouldn't want to commute back and forth to the east coast every two weeks, but if you rack up the status miles AC is definitely the way to go.

So did you just get your 10 year service award at Westjet or something?
AC has better seats, inflight entertainment and beverage service than Westjet right now.
If westjet wants to treat customers like they do on RyanAir, then hopefully their pricing structure will change over as well.

Ever since their CEO left a few years back they've been on a very steady plunge to mediocracy. Twice I've flown with car seats in the last 2 years and at all 4 check-ins the baggage attendants had different rules and needed to be corrected by others.
For what used to be a forward thinking company, they're use of social media is incredibly poor. If this was 5 years ago they would have been the absolute best, but now it's just brutal. They only respond to positive feedback and ignore negative. It's mind-blowing how they've blown such a good reputation.

Virgin America also barely turns a profit. Any airline can offer all the amenities that passengers want for free, but if they aren't making money, then they probably won't survive very long.
Don't EVER fly Air Canada. They are one of the worst companies I've ever dealt with. Not just airline, COMPANY. Air Canada charges $25 bucks a bag starting with THE FIRST CHECKED BAG for flights to the US. They have hidden fees in nearly every aspect of their business, and their flights are generally more expensive and less reliable. If you have to fly, and you aren't a giant (see above.) then fly West Jet. Air Canada is the freaking worst.
Weeeeeell I hate to break it to you, but that $25 checked fee baggage thing?
Yeah, it's coming to Westjet too, soon. And the rationale (allegedly... I heard this second hand from an employee so take that for what it's worth) is that the American carriers all charge the fee and pass the fee onto the airline, so because sometimes of transfers through the States, etc. Westjet wants the consumer to pick up the potential cost. Also- probably the explanation as to why AC does it but yes, very annoying.
Not quite as annoying as anytime somebody has a complaint about a cost of service kinda thing and then the heroes of CP all login to tell that person to stop being a cheapskate and that "everyone wants something for free"- but annoying nonetheless.
As for me, I find both Canadian airlines essentially the same. I don't see any big differences and flying in general in Canada, like everything else, is a rip off and overpriced and you feel like you're being gouged in most instances. Flying really has little to do with distance and true cost, or at least that is what my experience is.
I once had to fly back from Germany, it was cheaper to get a return ticket than a one way. How does that make sense in any world?
^ Great, now there will be even more people stuffing their friggin luggage into overhead bins designed to hold purses, coats and laptop bags. And then to think how much room there is in this great airplane design feature called a "cargo hold".
In a nutshell, a guy spends $50,000+ to fly his family of five to Australia over Christmas in Executive Class. One of the seats doesn't recline at all, which essentially makes it pointless to have spent $10,000 on the seat. He asks for a refund or some recompense. All Air Canada gave him was a future travel voucher for $500.
I have flown WestJet and Air Canada both a few times over the last year. I prefer Air Canada because I find their in flight entertainment way better than the daytime tv you are forced to watch on WestJet. Seats are a wash, I find WestJet seats are getting worn out now and the screens all scratched up. And I find the WestJet service to be a little tacky with the jokes and such.

Have fun on Air Canada
First. World. Problems.
I have no sympathy for someone who spends $50k for his family to fly. Dude should have just used a private jet at that price. Better yet, put one of your kids on the broken chair; I doubt they're tall enough anyways to enjoy a reclined seat. I guess the ludicrously generous legroom and filet mignon dinners didn't bridge the complaint gap either.
