And he's perpetuating lies from the developers. The MGA mandates a 30 year land supply, and there are currently 8 new subdivisions currently building out, and sure to be more in the future.
I know most of those "silly hall bureaucrats" who work in subdivision and new communities, so those comment piss me off.

If this piece of news was meant to be released on a certain day to do some real damage, it certainly would make more sense to do it at a time when there are some actual candidates chosen by the Suburban mafia to rally against, or when voters could still turn some of the anger into votes. Chances are though, this is long forgotten in voters minds in 6 months.
Yeah, the timing here is not interesting whatsoever.

In the past I would agree with you, but with this being the digital-social media super age and all it can be brought up again and again much to the dissatisfaction of the candidates that will be backed by this group.
I was on the fence about who I would support in my ward (7), now with this news you better believe I'm going to war for Druh (even though we don't see eye to eye on everything).

I don't disagree it can do damage, but remember though, that you are head of the game in a lot of ways...not everyone is as "with it". Most voters out there don't scour and tweet and retweet about political issues that happened months ago. They hear about something on QR77 for a week, get angry, and then next week find something new to get angry about.
I mean if everyone was up on the track record of their alderman, why the hell would anyone vote for Big Red and John Mar over and over?

What am I missing here? Seems like a lot of posters that I generally like and agree with are on the complete opposite side of this one from me (or I'm on the opposite from them!). I just can't see what the big deal is here....a bunch of developers gave a bunch of cash to Preston Manning and are hoping to get candidates elected who support them. Its barely even newsworthy!

The way I'm reading the thread is folks have a problem with it because the way they seem to be going about getting what they want seems shady to many. Like Wetzel is holding shady closed door meetings to get what he wants.
I don't really have an opinion either way on this, but that's my interpretation of what other posters seem to be in arms about.

Well, in addition to breaking campaign financing rules, they appear to be buying candidates. Bad optics in addition to bad behaviour.

All great points, but unless someone decides to challenge the mayor all of the Nenshi supporters will have a lot of time on their hands to educate friends, neighbours, co-workers, and many others about their area alderman and keep information like this fresh for them. They are after all for the most part the hyper-engaged voter that knows more than just their aldermanic candidates.
I'm the perfect example of this, discussion has been fast and furious with my co-workers (multiple wards represented) about this and it will continue as we head towards October.

The Mayor in the eyeopener clip, posted above, gives a good summary of "what the big deal is".

I trust you will elaborate this claim.
From what I've heard some businesses have given money to a think tank.
Manning Centre has openly admitted (in the media) receiving the money and using it to finish their lavish offices.
The Manning Centre is also hosting a series of events, that candidates have to PAY for.... ANY candidate can attend.
The video does indicate the Druh Farrell was of the opinion some excess contributions may have been made in 2010 - yet in the past 2+ years she hasn't felt compelled to act on this.

Nothing illegal obviously, but its still vote buying. We just saw it in US America where something 90% of the public supported got shot down because one lobby prevented so from happening. Now the difference here is the home builders association can't buy at the level they can in America, but they can still exert influence, strong influence at that. If you're candidate X and the home builders association tells you back our measures or we'll donate up the ass to your opponent, its attempting to manipulate the process through threats.
Politics is still a game that runs off dollars, so if your candidate X and you know candidate Y is going to get multiple times as many donations as you (say 5), the challenge just becomes that much more difficult. It's attempting to unlevel the playing field, and its disgraceful.

Can't elaborate much right now (maybe after work), but Nenshi mentioned it in his interviews this morning with the Eye Opener and on 92.9 . . . It has to do with providing trucks (resources) for campaign work in excess of a certain amount. I admit I don't know all the deets but I do support Nenshi and he does have a strong understanding of campaign financing. Have a listen to the link posted in this thread and let me know what you think.

I have listened to it. And I think Nenshi is going off halfcocked like you are. Mind you he has good reason - he is starting to campaign.
Right now we don't have enough information. What if there was a fee charged for the trucks? Then it's an expense, not a gift in kind.
They talk about people building signs; those are volunteers, again not a gift in kind.
And again, Druh was supposedly aware of this. Why wasn't an investigation launched back in 2010?

Great questions! Guess we'll find out as the details come out then, won't we?
Lets just hope those details aren't from Shane Homes in a reactionary press conference.
