We are in Martindale, moving from ward 3 to ward 5 for the coming election.

Hopefully, there is someone good to vote for other than Ray "never say anything at council or in the media" Jones.

But he wears his leather Grey Cup jacket and is a 'man of the people'!

Just check out his pandering Alderman photoshoot:

I don't think many are surprised that it occurs. I think many are surprised that it has been caught on tape and made public.

While I know it occurs, that doesn't mean I'm so jaded that I'm not still disappointed when it comes to light.

Challenge for anyone:

Jones has been on council for 20 years now. Without looking it up (even that may not help), name one initiative on council that he has spearheaded in that time.

He tends to not put forward a lot of Notice of Motions. Usually asks thoughtful questions at Council, but is not one to vigorously or passionately debate most issues. He's a true constituent-oriented Alderman. Spends most of his efforts at the community-level solving problems, supporting community-led initiatives (neighbourhood clean-ups and so forth).

Cowperson
Thankfully his political motivations align with the long term best interests of the city.

A lot less people is paid to the aldermanic races (voters, candidates, and media all contribute to that). These developers aren't making their case for subsidies with voters, they're trying to buy the aldermen they need and hoping that voters aren't paying enough attention to kybosh the whole thing.

Attempting to circumvent the mayor, rather that openly facing off with him, is a rather sneaky way to advance their cause.

The only best interests he's motivated to protect are his own. Nenshi has not done anything of significance that serves the long term interests of Calgary.

Hah. What? The airport tunnel is the first thing he did and it's only Long term.

Why did Calgary need airport tunnel?

For the segment of the city that was cut off by the new runway, which, if it would have happened in a new SE suburb, would have been resolved immediately.

Yes, I've heard all of that. That part of his work is definitely a good thing.

But your answer reinforces my point, you can't think of anything he's championed. What infrastructure investments have come to ward 5 in the last 20 years?

Access off Deerfoot is just as good. So, half a billion for 5-10 min of time saving for NE residents was a great thing? I disagree. He had campaigned on that tunnel, so he has got it through regardless of its real merits.

Plus, the City's Transportation department concluded it would actually be slightly more expensive to build the infrastructure and extra required interchanges to go around the runway as opposed to under it.

Access off of Deerfoot is just as good? The main reason for the tunnel is access TO Deerfoot. How can Deerfoot be a good access to Deerfoot?

The underpass is not $500 million. That is the total cost of airport trail, which regardless of the tunnel or no tunnel, would need to be built. As I said above, building about 4 or 5 additional interchanges to go around the runway would have cost slightly more than building the tunnel.

It's also important to point out that eventual rail to the airport would not be possible/likely without the tunnel as the future link is planned to connect with the NE leg of the LRT.

I see Rick Bell has finally weighed in on this, what happened to him fighting for the average Joe? Seems more than happy to be a lap dog for Cal and company.

Pathetic.

I wonder what kind of home Rick lives in. Obviously would be hilarious if it was a Shane Home.

Rick lives in the Beltline in an apartment.

It's like he's a suburban sleeper agent in the midst of hipster-latte land...
