I was fine with the draft lottery until we went on our garbage time run. This thread is biased.

And no - it's not a plausible system. And this year would likely to be a mess that way anyway, as a shortened season will keep everyone in contention longer. I just like the notion not rewarding 'tanking' to finish the season.

Not sure why your picking on the Flames they have won the last 6 of 8. The Oiler's on the other hand seem to have built in excuses for losing every year....
Hoping the Flames win tonight!

I agree with your sentiments, I absolutely hate purposely tanking.
With that said , I'm not convinced sitting uninterested vet's who know they are eliminated and letting young talent showcase their skills , hopefully make an impression for next year should be considered tanking.
I mean obviously Cammalleri, Tanguay, etc. are better than the call ups when they are at their best but in terms of motivation I'm thinking the odds of winning this time of year would go up with the kids in the line up.

Bunch of young players in a game that doesn't mean anything?
Young guys aren't going to learn or show anything tonight they couldn't in an exhibition game next season - it will have about the same meaning.

We're not tanking, we're rebuilding now instead of waiting until next training camp/pre-season by giving ice time in real NHL (and not just exhibition) games to our prospects which they normally would not get.
If we tank as a by-product of that, then it will be to our advatage. If we win every game to end the season, then it will be to our advantage also because we would discover we have a lot of great talent in the cupboard.

Just get rid of the draft altogether and let players sign with whatever team they chose a la European Soccer leagues.

Well tonight the Flames sit Stempniak, Backlund, Stajan, Cammalleri.
They are in tank mode and have been for at least the last 2 weeks, but the young guys just haven't got the memo.
Scratching those players is an embarrassment to the NHL in my opinion. In what other league would they not dress the best possible lineup? It really is a disservice to the fans who watch the game.
I am hoping we win every game to end the season. Rewarding such actions is just plain wrong.
We made fun of the Oilers for purposely tanking yet here we are dressing a lineup the ECHL might reject.
The lottery needs to be changed and I liked this post in the GDT
Every non playoff team should have an equal chance so gong shows like tonight don't happen. Nashville is also icing a pathetic lineup.

It's called evaluating the young guys. Simple

I don't think winning 3 games in a row is tanking... regardless of the roster.
What's the problem?

Honestly, what's wrong with the idea?
Obviously there would be more rules than there are in Europe, ie. Players can only be signed as 18 year olds and teams must follow certain salary cap regulations, etc.

I'm disgusted. In other sports leagues I have seen teams fined for dressing what is deemed by the league as a lineup that is less than the most competitive lineup possible. 2 years ago in the EPL a team called Blackpool was fined a 5-figure penalty for resting key players in a match (a match that really didn't matter much at all)
Cammy, Backs, Stajan & Stempniak rested? That is disgusting. I refuse to watch. It had better result in a loss!

Lots of parity over in European football...
Honestly, we'd never land a top player ever again if that were to happen.

Bring on the Qatari owners!
At least then we won't need to worry about re-location.

Minimum you can have is one ball.
Just a basic frame work and I don't know how the odds exactly pan out, but it gives the best chance to the worst five, but also limits or prevents a team amassing a ton of first overalls.
|
Quickly ran the numbers and essentially the base percentage before adjustments are as follows:
1-5 have 11%
6-10 have 6%
11-14 have 2%
I think the percentages are about right, but there would still be that dive for five. It would defiantly depend on the other variables (playoffs/1st overalls). Essentially each ball subtracted or added is roughly a 2% increase or decrease.
