Fun to shoot! Can't go wrong, good zombie gun.... Lots of ammo locally aswell, just remember if you want to shoot it indoors you'll need non steel core ammo (so non surplus stuff).. Outdoors just buy the cheap crate of whatever eastern bloc ammo you can find

Actually was talking to the guy at Calgary SC, they allow it indoors with whatever type of ammo, so you can use the surplus stuff, which is nice.

I love shooting my SKS you will too. Just a note to make sure you clean the SKS after each use if you are using the corrosive ammo. Also the firing pin can gum up quickly and cause a dangerous situation with unexpected firing.
I bubba'd mine up just for poops and giggles.

If I wanted to bring my 12 gauge o/u into Canada from the UK to do some trap shooting on a holiday, will I be allowed to? Are there any special requirements that need to be met.
Thanks.

Ahhhh the good ol SKS. It almost seem like a requirement that if you are a Canadian firearms owner, you have an SKS.

Thinking about putting in a group buy for SKS Rifles. Looks like it is 360 for a case of Ammo and gun plus shipping. If anyone is interested let me know we are trying to bring the cost of shipping down. Or we can do them at $175 for the gun and split up ammo accordingly.

Calgary Shooting Centre has corrosive in either 1200 or 1440 (I forget) for $285.
I think all of the surplus you will find is corrosive. Otherwise you're paying a premium of like 20 cents more per shot.
I think everyone owns an SKS here because they are so cheap to shoot and they aren't a 22. I mean I love taking my .30-06 to the range, but since I don't hand load, 90cents-$1 per shot isn't a ton of fun.

Here is where we might order from. I am finding out if they will do a deal on shipping as just ordering one shipping is quite expensive

I have some Norinco stuff that is non corrosive however it has to be some of the dirtiest ammunition I've ever fired. The amount of sparks leaving the barrel is unreal. I should really just get some of the corrosive stuff but some nights after the range I just don't feel like stripping and cleaning.
What else do you shoot other than .30-06? I just got into reloading and I have to say, it really is a lot of fun. I've only done .40 so far but even with just that I've noticed a significant increase in accuracy. I always just bought cheap factory reloaded ammuntion so certainly not the best.
Reloading for your rifle would certainly improve accuracy as well. I just bought a set of .30-06 dies for my press as my brother just picked up a Savage in .30-06.
Totally recommend reloading. Fun stuff.

Yeah I've heard reloading is pretty fun. My .30-06 is an old 1917 Eddystone. That thing is a beast and fun to shoot. Deadly accurate.
Right now:
30-30 Winchester
44-40 Winchester (rarely)
.45 ACP
22LR (not reloadable)
9MM (NP-22 has been ordered and is in the mail )
Yeah, my grandfather has offered to give me all of his reloading equipment, I just don't have the space for it right now. But his is pretty old stuff.
Are you using one of the new progressive machines? I've heard they're amazing. You can buy some automation for them and get up to 900-1200 rounds per hour!!

Those progressive machines ARE impressive. However, based on the amount I shoot and the firearms I have, and the fact that I'm new ruled out me getting one first. Instead I bought a Lee Classic Turret Press. I would like one down the road but unless you are shooting thousands of rounds a month, they don't make much sense. They are pricey too. Plus I tend to shoot presicion rifles more than anything so not much point in progressive.
Your Grandfathers press is likely still fine, they haven't changed much over the years but his dies are likely in need of replacement. I'd recommend a new one but dies are hard to find atm.
I also have a .30-30 and that's the best rifle to learn to reload on. Also based on the other ones you have (9mm and .45) you would very much benefit from a good turret press.
It's not for everyone as it's safety, safety, safety. You MUST be in top of what you are doing. Be safe, stay alert and no distractions. It really is fun though, a good thing to do on those boring winter nights when there is no hockey on.

The link is going to tell you that you need to fill out form 5589, which can only be obtained by calling 1-800-731-4000 (non-resident firearms authorization).
I'm honestly not completely sure of the conditions, but I am sure that the CFO will let you know. I would definitely have information about where you are going, address, names, phone numbers. Hopefully it is an authorized area and not just shooting around on someone's land.
But yes, I know people who have brought arms in for hunting trips, etc.

Just thought I would mention this incase anyone is interest - Canada Ammo has a deal where you get a Norinco 1911 style pistol + 1000 rounds (.45 ACP).
For 499.99. Free shipping too.
If you ever wanted a 1911, you should take advantage of this deal. It is absolutely silly priced.

Well I passed my Pal and now am just waiting for the process to go through. I have a question about buying some guns. I am mostly going to just shoot gophers and do trap shooting maybe some duck hunting. I can't decided what to buy first an SKS for killing gophers or save up a little more for a shotgun. Is there anywhere that sells used shotguns? Since the remington 870 is timeless and consistently awesome I wouldn't mind trying to find a used one that is cheaper then buying new so I can have both guns.
Has anyone imported from the states before is it a hassle when you drive across the boarder?

You can't buy a firearm from the States without going through a licenced importer. Trying to do otherwise would produce a significant hassle.
As for buying a used shotgun, plent of them available. Both The Shooting Edge and Calgary Shooting Centre sell firearms on consignment. Numerous Canadian website/forums will have firearm exchange sections.

Well that is disappointing they look to have way better sales and I was hoping to maybe time one and drive down and pick one up and come back. From importing website it looks like as long as you have PAL and it is non-restricted it is easy

The problem is that there are two sets of laws - Canada and the US. The US prohibits a foreigner to have possession of any firearms, there are also some items you need to fill out with the FDA.
Now, there are options -
Prophet River imports for a cost of 200 dollars per firearm
Irunguns also imports them for a cost of 200 dollars per (from any retailer in the US), but you get discounts if you buy bulk and a discount if you buy from the online store.
Most places don't want the hassle of shipping to Canada or getting import certificates.
Also keep in mind you can't import some stuff because of mag caps, barrel length, etc. So it can be quite a hassle.
