I really really hope they catch this psychopath alive, what could inspire someone to do this? Why wouldn't they have tried to flee? Trying to get as high a kill count as possible?

Yep, I am sure they intended a lot more casualties than just 3, which is why they chose such a publicly attended event like the Boston Marathon. So why not try and go after students at MIT as a fallback?
