Trading down is common but in the NHL rarely do you see teams trade out of the top five. Has it ever happened once? It's usually more common outside the top 10 such as what the Flames did last year.

Within the top 5 it has happened. Don't know if someone has traded out of the top 5

Islanders trade with the Leafs swapping the 5th and the 7th overall picks in the 2008 draft. Leafs picked Schenn. Then Islanders traded down again with Nashville. Nashville picks Wilson and Islanders drafted Bailey.
Good god those picks turned out to be average.

In 1999 TB traded out of the first round after having the top pick overall.

I think depending on whether they get one of the top centres or Nurse with the 8th pick (yup, I'm just going to assume that's where they are going to finish), Flames will be looking at Hartman and Compher with the late first rounders, both guys just scream Weisbrod types.

Now the Flames are picking 6th.
Florida Jones
Colorado Drouin
Carolina MacKinnon
Nashville Barkov
Tampa Bay Monahan
Calgary Lindholm
We need to finish bottom 6 to get a centerman.
While Nurse and Nichushkin are good options at 7 and 8 the Flames need to remember how to lose again.

Depending on how he does in interviews at the combine if we can't draft Mackinnon or Barkov I'd rather have Nichushkin. The team needs elite superstar level talent and by all accounts he's that. Of course if he's non-commital then avoid him but I don't think the Flames can pass on Superstar level talent if it's available to them.
The Flames are facing the Ducks next (When was the last time we beat Anaheim?) and then have a 4 Game road trip (5-13-2 on the road)... I don't see much winning happening to close out the season. Maybe Nashville but I'd be surprised if we do better then 1-4 over the final five.

Schenn isn't anything special but this example goes to show that teams are better off staying where they are in the top 10 and taking the best player available.

My thoughts provided Florida wins the lottery...
Florida - Jones
Colorado - Drouin
Carolina - MacKinnon
Nashville - Barkov
Tampa Bay - Nichuskin
Calgary - Monahan
St Louis Pick (~20th) - Gauthier (need size in the system, 6'5" 210lb versatile position F)
Pittsburgh Pick (~28-30th) - Bigras/Bowie/Hagg/McCoshen (best dman available)
If a team originally picking later than Calgary bumps them down a position, if none of those top 6 are still around, I guess you take Lindholm or Nurse... I'd be way less excited about it though. If that happened and I was Feaster, I'd be trying to make a trade to move up to get one of these guys. Flames are in desperate need of that next go-to guy.

I think I'd take Lindholm over Monahan, personally.

About Nichushkin.
Despite his strong assets, he needs improvement on his accuracy and he saw limited playing time in the European league this year as a result, though he did improved in the playoffs. When a player with that skill has his minutes reduced it certainly questions his value, though he is still young and must develop like the rest of his draft class nominees.

I really hope the Flames can get into the top 3 because Jones, Drouin, or MacKinnon would really help this franchise out immediately. Monahan would be more of a project.
Drouin is a very dynamic player. I'd love to see the Flames build around him.

I don't think the Flames should be looking at Nurse unless all of the above players are off the board. I'm still not really sold on Nichuskin but if we cannot land one of MacKinnon, Drouin or Barkov then we should be targetting Monahan or Lindholm.

The difference between something like Shinkaruk (at #9) is big enough to warrant trading up to take a Lindholm or Monahan (at #5), isn't it?
And there appears to be a world of difference between a Shinkaruk & MacKinnon. If it doesn't cost the Flames a guy like Brodie, Feaster should seriously consider moving up from 7th-or- worse to 5th-or-better.

I wonder what would be the chances of the Flames picking up Curtis Lazar with the Blues pick? Seems like he could go anywhere from early to late teens. Would be a nice to pick up future #1 and #2 centers out of a single draft.

Similar playing styles, but Lindholm is a better prospect heading into the draft than Backstrom was heading into his.
I would say that Lindholm might never hit 100 like Backstrom - due to not having a player like Ovechkin convert so many chances(not saying Ovie makes Backstrom) but Lindholm could definitely be an 80-90 point guy that plays both ends of the ice and in all situations. He's more physical than Nik.
Lindholm is a pretty safe prospect, in that it would be a shock if he's not at the very least a good third line pivot(like Monahan) but he has a higher upside in terms of production than Monahan. Which is why I think Lindholm is a better pick at this point.

Monahan, Lindholm and Barkov have a realistic chance of being very good number 1 centres. Maybe they aren't franchise players like Getzlaf, Staal, or Tavares/Stamkos but they can still be a huge part of the core like the Mike Richards', Niklas Backstroms' and Kopitars' of the world.
