D-man Darnell Nurse looks to have the mean streak, size and hopefully skill that I want to see on the Flames. Problem is he's right between the Flames first 2 picks.

Stylistic comparisons, so I'm not saying these guys will have identical careers.
MacKinnon - Sakic?
Barkov - M. Koivu?
Drouin - Giroux?
Lindholm - not sure I've seen him enough to say
Monahan - haven seen him a ton either but E. Staal?

I bet that Nurse is picked by either the Oilers or the Flyers, somewhere in the 6-8 range
If he turns out to be Jokinen is it really that bad? You'd obviously prefer his career to not start as brutal as Jokinen's but he had seven 20 goal seasons and peaked at 39 goals and 91 points.
90 points would be great obviously, but what the two players really have in common is size and nationality. As everyone knows, Olli was a goalscoring center, not a playmaking two-way center like Barkov. I think it's noteworthy that Barkov still scores more goals than Jokinen at a younger age but he projects to be much more of a classic center. Olli didn't even play defense until Brent Sutter taught him. It's a really lazy comparison.
It's funny that the comparison in this discussion has gone from Ron Francis to Olli Jokinen. Just all over the place. What do those two players have in common?
But yeah, if Barkov keeps his style and doesn't suffer a sudden psychogenic fugue and turn into a pumpkinhead overnight, then 90 points from solid center like him would make him a great player.
Olli Jokinen was a beast in his prime. Hence why he was so highly sought after by the Flames at that time. Yeah his play slipped in PHX and CGY but obviously he was entering his post apex part of his career. Kind of surprised that people are crying to steer clear of an Olii Jokinen related player.
That said I don't see it outside of being a big bodied Finn who plays center. His playmaking skills appear to be greater than that of Olli. And I don't believe Olli's two way game was that good to begin with and only improved while in CGY. correct me if I am wrong but that makes Barkov a more enticing pick given that he is good in all areas of his game.

If you want to find a Finnish comparable, then Koivu is as close as you can get, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Barkov is years ahead of Koivu in development and shows much more offense at this stage. On the other hand, Koivu plays with more of an edge and has exceptional leadership qualities - too early to say how much of that Barkov will have in the NHL.
It's interesting that in Barkov's case Button is reaching for classic comparisons rather than current players. He's compared Barkov to Dale Hawerchuk and Ron Francis.
Yeah I remember, makes me wonder was it not a very good draft year or what. But it´s not an over evaluation to say Barkov is years ahead of Olli. OJ also was a complete douchbag when he was younger until Keenan got the best out of him in Florida. I remember the nickname Pumpkinhead that Rob Blake gave in LA... probably fitted both descriptions of his character and actual shape of his head.
He was known in Finland for his cocky attitude (and he admits this himself). It became a running joke. For years people called him "boss". Barkov is very different in that regard.
It's not that I think Olli Jokinen terrible and want to "defend" Barkov. But Olli was a hotshot youngster while Barkov already plays an intelligent mature game all over the ice. But who knows how he'll develop. Who knows if he can play the same game in the NHL. Maybe in terms of goalscoring there are similarities but I don't think goalscoring will ever be Barkov's main asset. In terms of overall puck management the comparison seems terrible right now.
"Barkov is a creative with a very solid overall package and the skill set to compensate for his below-average skating, making him one of the top prospects for the 2013 NHL Draft."
Barkov (below average skating) and only 8 minutes in penalties. Nichushkin low scoring (shot accuracy could be improved) and no penalties)
I believe that few penalties are an indication of intensity. I'd skip both these players and pick Nurse. His point total is close to Barkov. He's the #2 rated defenceman in the draft. If we can't get one of the top three then let's get a 1st pairing defenceman.

If the flames really are high on Nurse, trade up with the St. Louis pick to get him. No point grabbing him at 4,5 with our own 1st rounder when we need that fabled #1C desperately. Get both.

Since I have nothing else to do, this is my list for the Flames:
1. MacKinnon
2. Jones
3. Drouin
4. Barkov
5. Lindholm (The more I read, the more I really like him. Natural centre, right handed; he'll be a valuable player. Might not be the end of the world if we fall out of the top 4, and rumours are the Flames are high on him.)
6. Monahan
7. Nurse
8. Nichuskin
9. Ristolainen
10. Pulock

I'd rather use the St. Louis pick to get Kerby Rychel. I think he'd be your #1 C. He played on a very weak team yet still got almost 1/5 or their total goals and assists.
6'1" 200 lbs 41 goals 33 assits
He has been Mr. Everything for the Spitfires, playing in all situations and providing significant leadership on and off the ice. He is a dynamic skater and he has also shown that he can be a physical force, just like his father Warren before him. He also has incredible versatility and adaptability to any situation. Rychel will be a great addition to any team with a young forward group as he could sure come in and provide much needed assistance.

this is the second time I've read this on the forum but i haven't seen anything confirming it. Where did you see this? I hope it's true.

I'm not quite sure why... but Spitfire fans hate the guy. I suspect a lot of it has to do with his dad owning the team so there's feelings of favourtism but he's obviously put up good numbers.
There's 2 very conflicting opinions I've heard on here and I'm curious for input. I've read a lot of people who talk about the importance of team culture and also that we need to draft BPA. So how do you accommodate both of these ideas? Draft people who fit the culture, or define your teams culture based on draftees? Or is it a mix of both where you develope and assimilate prospects to fit the team and in turn build around them?
PS I'm a long time lurker, 2nd time poster
