Was at the game too. Agree with this... Skating wasn't great, but first game / first goal - the kid has to be pumped about that. I agree though that his skill-set is probably a solid 3rd liner - no more than 2nd liner if he maxes everything out potential-wise. Solid prospect - mostly glad to see we have good prospects up and down the roster. Sure some holes exist in the prospect pool - but I feel better than I have in a long time that we've got some powder in the barrel during the reload instead of blanks.

He looked a bit lost out there on most of his shifts, but that's to be expected coming from college straight to the NHL with only one practice to get ready. Skating looked awkward, but he arrived at the front of the net at the right time on at least two occasions. His chance in the first was excellent and obviously getting a goal in his first game is great.
He looked really big out there, but he needs to start finishing his checks next game. Hopefully he can be a net front presence similar to what Moss was, but more durable and, once he gets comfortable, more physical.

Not a bad showing for his first game. The NHL is a huge step up from the NCAA, and he didn't even get a practice to acclimate to the speed in NHL situations. Positionally he was a little lost, but he made smart simple plays with his puck touches. When in doubt, get the puck deep, and he did that multiple times.
Regarding his skating, I don't think he's as slow as some say, but he certainly lacks agility on his skates. He made a few battleship-esque turns out there.
Overall, it was a fine showing for a first game. I'd like to see him throw his weight around a bit, but the goal was nice to see.

We can't judge a thing from his play tn. He's playing in a new league, with new speed where he literally knows no one.
Not worried about his hesitancy. He more than likely was terrified of making a mistake. Which could explain him not finishing his checks and lack of speed. I'm not saying he's going to be a speedster, but he was probably spending most of his time worried if he was in the right place.

I have never played at the NCAA level, or the NHL level, but I suspect there might be a bit of a difference.
Perhaps it might be better to review this fella's play at the end of the season.

Right place right time usually means he was lucky the puck bounced to him and he thankfully found it.
Guys that go to the net create their own puck luck and that's exactly what Hanowski did.

Trust me, it is a very loose comparison. It was more his awkward skating for me. If we could get 50% of a Rick Tocchet, for 3 years of a declining Iginla, we won that trade. I am just very worried about his skating. There is a point where it just isn't going to improve much. He seems very bottom heavy. I really want them to give him a chance though.
A big body that can hold his own in front of the net, can make up for all sorts of flaws. A lot of not so great all around players have made solid productive careers out of being that guy.
What I really like that I see though, is we have a really good mix of young talent. Up North, they have one type of young player, flashy forward, and that is their problem. We seem to have a little bit of everything, which to me, makes for a better mix.

I was very impressed with his post-game interview. He seems to be an intelligent guy and it was funny to watch him wait for Roger Millions to finish spoon-feeding him an answer within every question before he could get a word in.
He seemed to have a very good grasp on where he's going to need work, but sounds confident that he can put work in to address it. He's going to be an interesting player to watch in training camp next year to see if he can stick.

Seems like the second coming of Niemisz: people said the same thing...poor skating? Doesn't matter so long as he gets there... Can make a living in front of the net... Needs to be more aggressive...
Hopefully, he can be a steady third liner, but sure seems like déjà vu to me.

Except Neimsz seemed to lack that drive that inspires confidence that he can find the game the team needed him to find.
Not saying that Hanowski has that drive and I'm confident he'll play a valuable role on this team... just that after 1 game (in which he scored, lets not forget) we can't judge anything.

I was at the game as well. i'd give him a B, he got a goal and should have scored another on a nice give and go with Cammy. He showed a good quick release but it was a nice save from backstrom. Other than those two shifts, however, he did virtually nothing. Hopefully, with a few more games of experience, he plays with a little more edge, he's got the frame to be an effective 3rd line winger with scoring potential, as long as he can get in on the forecheck a little better.

1) Go to the net
2) When in doubt see rule number 1
That's all I ask for in a first game for a player from college

Agreed wrt the one game comment. Simply remarking on the physical similarities and the expected challenges that Hanowski will need to overcome.
Scoring in your first game isn't necessarily a sign of anything.
