I unfortunately had a job that made me used to that kind of horror; the gore doesn't bother me but the thought of the agony that man is going to be in for months and months really upsets me. The lack of emotion on his face goes to show how the body looks after itself by putting itself into shock mode.

Whoever it was it was well thought out to cause the most injurys, one explosion stops the race in it's tracks and 10 seconds later a bomb closer to the race track itself to "get" the stopped runners. reports of ball bearings,nails..etc and about 12 reported people who lost limbs tells me this was not just a nutjob.
C4 is relatively easy to get anywhere if you have money and connections, it is available to demolitions guys on the civilian market and gets stolen occasionally.

It is impossible to know at this stage but this has all the hall marks of a couple of small pipe bombs which is relatively unsophisticated by 'real terrorist' standards

As such expect it wont be Al Queda but some home grown nutter, they may claim to be the Black Panther Islamic Revoltionary Front or the like but the whole thing seems way to random and amatuar, I see Al Queda as more likely to use suicide bombers strapped up with C4 (as the suicide aspect really rattles us in the west) and the blast would aim to kill hundreds.

It also strikes me that Boston is fairly close to Sandy Hook so it may turn out to be some wack job punishing those godless north easterners for gun control.
The recent attempted Times Sq bombing, which was bungled by an incapable operative, was linked to Al Qaeda. A lack of sophistication doesn't mean anything.

Apparently Al Qaeda released instructions on how to make bombs just like this recently. Could be a self radicalized follower acting on his own for Al Q. So linked, but in very general terms.

Could still be a domestic type though. The date seems to suggest that.

Yep.

Al Queda seems to be very opportunisitic. Their attacks range from well co-ordinated attacks involving hundreds of people to amateur attacks involving single individuals.

Isn't Al Qaeda quite decentralized? I'd expect there to be a wide variation in the proficiency of their operatives.

On a more personal note, I also have friends/family in Boston... everyone's okay though.

The FBI will link the rising cost of ice cream to Al Qaeda as will homeland security as it justifies their budget, the reality is just because a dude in the US decides to 'join the jihad' doesn't mean AQ' has anything to do with it other than some web page operator wishing him well in his mayrterdom.

Even the guys in the UK, who were way more dialed in were still fairly tenuous in their actual links.

It suits both parties purpose though to claim Al Qaeda links though, it makes some sad lonely idiot with a bomb feel more important and it, as I said, justifies extra dosh for the cops.

If it was any organised action we would have had responsibility claimed by now though

It isn't difficult to get explosives in Canada, many mining operations and construction sites use explosives in their work. I also don't think that the use of projectiles such as ball bearings and nails indicates that it isn't a nutjob (not something that you can easily define by the way) just someone who knows something about explosives and shrapnel.

Also did you just spell Iraq with a c?

I clicked the link because I thought it would be a good learning tool for me being a first aider.

I realized there may be situations that you will not be able to do anything for the victim other that reassure them and hold their hand. There is no amount of dressing that could make that wound heal/feel any better.

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about the guy that's not wearing any PPE (gloves) that in the heat of the moment doesn't care about communicable diseases and is just doing everything he can to get this guy to emergency care. I've been trained to always have barrier devices in place to protect yourself and the victim. I think in this situation I would say "#### it... this guy needs my help."

Bless all the emergency responders, general public that helped and the victims of this horrible tragedy.

Not 100% sure but I think a reporter at the latest news conference just asked if the explosions were an inside job 'designed to infringe on our civil liberties.'

That sorta garbage should have you arrested.

I heard the wack job too, demanding to be told why people were being told to stay calm before the bomb and claiming this was evidance of a false flag op.
I suppose we have a few years of that crap to look foward to now.

Looks like lanny has landed on his feet since being booted from cp. I have no idea how some people develop that view.

I was kind of hoping Deval Patrick would tell the guy to go #### himself instead of the stone faced no.

CNN.com says someone with a leg wound is under protection at a hospital. But not under arrest.

So any thought that this was planned and prepared before Daylight savings time and the bomber forgot to change his clock, hence it happening one hour later than it should have?

That was actually my first thought when I heard the news.
