Default Garrioch: "Ken King will be moving on"

This was mentioned on the FAN 960 about five mins. ago, and appears in Bruce Garriach's "Rumours du Jour" weekly column:

Garrioch is notorious for making things up, but has had some contact this week with Weisbrod who is currently scouting in the Ottawa area.

"Moving On" could mean getting promoted to a position where he overlooks the Flames, Roughnecks, Stampeders, etc. and is no longer involved in day to day hockey operations. With the new arena being announced I think Ken's business acumen will still be valuable to the team, and I can't really see the owners firing him

Or this whole rumour could be bunk. Either way I would want a guy like Burke brought in, Ken King is smart guy who has done a lot for the Flames brand, but right now we have two non-hockey guys in Feaster and King running the show, I want somebody with their own eye for talent

I can only hope this rumour is true. And by moving on I hope it means out of the organization altogether.

With the arena deal and start of the Flames Group, I can't imagine that he will be leaving Flames ownership completely. Hopefully by moving on, it means away from hockey ops, and someone with hockey prestige and knowledge comes in to be the hockey president.

we already seem to be further along our rebuild than Edmonton. if we manage to get rid of our incompetent management before them then that will be icing on the cake

I really like KK. I think he has done a lot, but everyone needs a change of scenery after a while. If you've ever dealt with him you know he is a pretty remarkable business manager.

There are a lot of simpleton's who've never even run a hot dog stand piling on the hate towards him.

This was the rumour last week at Saddledome. He can take his henchmen with him..Rollie Cyr and the other geeks that have tainted the organization.

Hearing he will have some form of platform in the construction of New Arena and Football stadium. He will still get to bully people from the city and province. Just stay OUT OF HOCKEY.

The hate on for Ken King is ridiculous. He was a big part of bringing the organization back to respectability. Sure, things haven't gone well in recent years. That's pro sports, it happens. Doesn't mean the guy didn't do a good job, at least for a while. Even if he's moving on I've always liked what he brought to the organization in terms of being the face of the business side of things.

Can you elaborate on this 'contact'? There are few in the hockey media I trust less than Garrioch as he's basically Eklund with a real job. Honestly I'm not sure even Weisbrod would be privy to this unless it's already been decided and is just a formality waiting to be announced at the end of the season.

If true it's bitter sweet. King has done a lot of good things for the Calgary Flames but it seems his inability to keep out of hockey operations has tarnished what should have been looked at as a pretty successful tenure.

Jay Feaster will assume the role of president/GM. Just watch. Or they'll make him president and get a new GM (which might actually suit him more).

Good news. He did well managing the front end business but piecing together thoughts here and there...he was too involved in hockey operations.

I could see Feaster - Prez, Weisbrod - GM.

each time one of these threads pops up, and his defenders say King had done a good job on the business side, I like to refer to a direct quote from Ken King, who says the "business is hockey"

"Anything short of year after year improvement should be challenged. While we run a building, and we run a food and beverage operation, the core of our business is the Flaming C and the hockey team. (The GM) and I hold the responsibility for our challenges and our setbacks" - Ken King

The repeated failure of the hockey club ultimately has to lie at the feet of the team president.

Yeah but at the end of the day he's not a lot different than Kevin Lowe in Edmonton. Too much involvement and not enough hockey smarts. All the failures and embaressment of both franchises over the past few years falls at both of their feet. If true this is the right move on the road towards respectability.
