If he plays jr again next season, he'll be playing C, I bet.

EDIT : I meant to reply to the post suggesting C is out-of-position for Drouin.

I'll be happy with either McKinnon or Drouin, but after watching World Jrs (small sample size I know), I'm leaning more towards Drouin. Smaller guy but so strong on his skates.

Mackinnon & Drouin are roughly the same size. Mackinnon is an inch taller but Drouin is a bit heavier. Some people saying we shouldn't draft Drouin because he's too small need to remember this. Minimal difference in size.

I prefer Mackinnon because he's right-sided center or right-wing. Fills a major organisational need either way. I think he's the kind of player who would be a real star in Calgary.

If we win our way out of the top 3 there will still be Barkov, Lindholm, Monahan & Nichushkin on the board. We're going to get someone really exciting. Can't wait.

It's 8 years for re-signing your own players.

The Agreement includes terms that limit the length of individual Player contracts to seven years (eight when a team is re-signing its own Player)...

Might be interested in who the Flames might virtually get:

2013 NHL Mock Draft: The Next Ones April Edition:

Just completed - the most in depth mock draft on the planet up at THW. Okay, well maybe not on the planet. Heck, maybe not even in North America. But...it is pretty in depth...and it is pretty awesome; well, at least from Flames perspective.

Some story lines:
- Flames draft 2 kids born in Calgary plus an offensive dynamo
- Habs draft prospect from la belle province
- Oilers nab another Russian
- Leafs draft son of enforcer
- So do Jets!
- Sens get an ice warrior
- Avs brings a big blueliner back home! (not that much of a shock).
- Devils cash in on Grigorenko situation take 2.
- Caps refurbish their Swedish prospect ranks

Link to results of full mock draft

I still think Monahan is who we should be targeting anyways. Big skilled leader who is dynamite in face offs. Scores and creates and has a solid two way game. This guys is future captain material. You can't go wrong with either Mack or Monahan.

As much as i like Monahan, if Drouin is on the board with our pick, no way in hell should we pass on him. If we are picking 5th then yeah i would take him or Lindholm. Honestly can't fully decide between those two.

Regardless of who we pick, our rebuild will be quicker than the Oilers

I thought the Oilers rebuild was supposed to be over this season.

Maybe it's time they blew it up again.

The trick is to not throw every 18 year old prospect you have into the NHL full time on a team with a losing atmosphere

re: Drouin vs MacKinnon

I was in Halifax last week for work and the Mooseheads are huge there. The locals seem think that their team will not lose another game before going to the Memorial Cup in Saskatoon. They have swept their first and secound round series vs. Saint John and Gatineau, by a total score of 48-9.

Anyhow, I asked the locals who would they take if they were the Flames. Overall, there was alot of hesitation when the question was asked, as it appears not to be a clear cut #1. However, the general comments for each player were as follows:

1) Drouin (Playoffs 8GP, 4G, 11A, +10, 2 PIM, 29 shots, Faceoffs 2/9 @ 22%) - Excetional puck handling skills at any speed and exceptional playmaker. Very quick and can turn on the dime. Extraordinary vision on ice.

2) MacKinnon (Playoffs 8GP, 3G, 12 A, +8, 4 PIM, 36 shots, Faceoffs 114/181 @ 63%) - More of a shooter vs playmaker. Heavy shot. Top notch acceleration from a standing point. Multi dimensional as he can play both a finesse or rough and tumble game.
Interesting enough, there's a guy by the name of Stephane Fournier that is leading the team in playoff scoring ( 8 GP, 11G, 8 A, + 9). He's 6'3" winger, 210 llbs undrafted.

Regular season stats:

Drouin (5'11", 176 llbs) - 49 GP, 41 G, 64 A, 105 pts, +48, 32 PIM, 173 shots, FO 52/122) = 42.6%; Shootouts 2/4

MacKinnon (5 '11", 179 llbs) - 44 GP, 34 G, 43 A, 75 pts, +40, 45 PIM, 201 shots, FO 504/970 = 52%; Shootouts 1/3

Overall, the locals favoured Drouin, due to the high level stick handling, play making ability, and being more creative than MacKinnon which will be important in shootouts. Also, MacKinnon's style of play is more susceptable to injury.

It boils down to this: If Flames want a highly skilled player in all facets of the game, take Drouin, as it appears he has more of a creative side, which will be extremely impotant in shootouts. If Flames want a centre to take face offs, a scorer and someone who can also play a rough and tough game, take MacKinnon.

MacKinnon sounds like Staal in 2003 if he was 4 inches shorter.

With all the descriptions about Mackinnon I can't help bit draw comparisons to Taylor hall: that reckless north south style. The difference being that mackinnon takes faceoffs. Whereas with drouin, he's sounding like an upgraded version of eberle, perhaps with more potential. Plus the fact that he's a playmaker, instead of a shoot first player like Mackinnon, makes me believe that he's much easier to build around. Obviously they can't go wrong with either, but I'd love to see the flames pick drouin and maybe trade up to get a guy like Monahan as well. If not, then target gauthier with the STL pick and then take a chance on another centre like klimchuk with the PIT pick.

That makes me lean toward Drouin. It sounds like he'd be better suited to making the players around him better with his creativity and playmaking. Let him dictate play and set up Baertschi and company...

Drouin might be the better junior player right now, but I really don't think he's the better prospect.

I think they will both be superstars, but MacKinnon does everything.

After watching Drouin highlights...the guy sure likes going backhand shelf. One a serious note he's a gamer. Overall Mackinnon is the better player but i have a feeling that Drouin's game is more built for longevity seeing how long these skilled wingers have lasted in the NHL (St. Louis, Elias, Selanne, Whitney, Jagr, ect). Can't wait for draft day.

What if the unthinkable happens, and the Flames reel off a few more wins to end up drafting 8-12? In that scenario, I definitely hope Feaster looks to move up to the top 6 or top 3.

Failing that, who do you take if the Elite Eight (Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm, Nurse, Nichushkin*) are gone?

Shinkaruk?
Zadorov?
Ristolainen?
Pulock?
Zykov?
Domi?

*if Nichushkin is still around and the Flames are picking about 10th, I'd take him.

Or do you trade down for more picks and go with a shotgun approach in this draft?

I'd really like to see Calgary potentially make some moves with either the PIT/STL picks, or both. Drafting two times in the top 10 of this draft could expedite the rebuild rather quickly. If there was some random player we had to throw in to make it happen I would do it. If we can come away with two sure fire studs, it should not take long to turn this thing around.
