Ya, those 55 assists in 06-07, 48 assists in 07-08, 54 assists in 08-09 were pretty much all fluke.
It's not like he was consistant either, getting 30+ assists in 12 years strai....wait, what?

2014 could be a big year, with Gaudreau, Agostini, Arnold, and the 2013 and 2014 first round picks all joining the team at once.

I wonder if Khabibulin will rip the Oilers young guns about an upcoming Vegas trip. Lol

I fell asleep in the third, but was really impressed by a bunch of guys last night. Baertschi and Backlund were great together, and Brodie was a beast once again, munching those minutes. Biggest surprise of the night though, Jackman, with a dominate performance the likes of which we haven't seen in years.
6 shots? Check. 7 hits? Check. 2 assists? Check. Driving hard to the net? Check. Dude was a force out there last night, major props to him for a great game.
Of course, this was the Oilers they were playing, so can't get too excited, but it was an enjoyable romp regardless.

I think the Oilers are in far worse shape than the Flames. 3 or 4 years into their rebuild, they are completely lost in the wilderness.

The Flames' 2013 first-rounder will almost certainly start with the team next fall. In my opinion, it is probably better that the insertion of the Flames prospects into the lineup is staggered from year-to-year anyhow.

The only way i see this years first rounder being in the NHL next year is if they draft Jones, MacKinnon, or Drouin. Even then i don't think its a guarantee.

I would think it would be 95% and take an injury to keep those 3 out of the line-up if they are drafted next year. The 5% is for the slight chance that Drouin is sent back but Jones and Mackinnon are playing for the Flames if they are drafted.
After those 3 maybe Barkov plays but the others likely don't play for Flames and go back to junior/Europe.

It was great to see Reinhart and Sven get their first goals. For the last couple of games they have been competing hard and they definitely deserve to be rewarded.
Hopefully now that they have the monkeys off their back they can find a grove and keep scoring

5 players that are key to our rebuild being quicker then that crap team up north are Horak, Baertchi, Reinhart, Brodie and Backlund. Great start but allot of work to do.

I think we've got an extremely high chance of it happening if it is one of those three. There's almost always too much pressure to move a top 3 into the NHL either because they think there's nothing to learn at the CHL level or because fans, rightly or wrongly, demand it.
In the past 5 drafts, the players drafted #1, 2, or 3 who didn't make the NHL team next year were:
- Erik Gudbranson
- Jonathan Huberdeau
- Ryan Murray
Of those, only Huberdeau was a big surprise to me. Columbus rebuilt their back end and gave Murray time to develop to his reasonably safe cap, while I have never been a fan of Gudbranson.
Either way, that's about a 20% chance to not make the team if we go by simple math. With the depth the Flames have in all categories, I don't see them being able to turn away MacKinnon, who's likely a ready made 2nd line C, Drouin, likely a top 6 forward, or Jones, who beats most D here already.

Was able to watch the "replay" on CBC and had some thoughts on the game that have probably been covered (although, like a lot of you, I read the whole thread, and have thoroughly enjoyed it!).
- speed. Maybe it's because I watched the 1986 Flames/Oilers playoff game where it seemed really slow, but the Flames looked fast, really fast. As much as the Kool-aid vendors at HNIC and TSN keep telling us the the coilers are these offensive juggernauts that are impossible to stop, I thought the Flames matched, and in a lot of cases, exceeded the coilers speed and looked hard to keep up with.
-Jackman- who is this guy? He's looked like a different dude the last few games, but last night may have been his best as a Flame. Always in the way (except when he got burnt by Hall), and was a beast on the forecheck.
- Schultz - is this guy that bad or is it the coilers bringing him down (or vice versa). Seems ok in the other teams zone, but, wow, does he make a lot of dumb decisions in his own zone - not just Reinhart's goal, but a few other times the giveaways were head shakers.
- Sarich - I mentioned Jackman looking like a different dude, but I thought Sarich was solid again. While he doesn't have the speed, he's been positionally smart and I think is a good leader for these younger dudes.
Anyway, just a few thoughts. Thanks for all the posts! This thread is a nice distraction from the previous weeks!

Suck it Oilers. Something "special" indeed...
|
From my calcs going through NHL.com, since 2002-03, as far as that site goes back, Flames regular season record is 37-16-3-1 against the Oilers, and no, Flames haven't lost a season series to them in the past decade.

Hopefully this gets Sven going again.
I forgot how good it feels to be a spoiler.

Just checked the standings and we have as many wins as the Oilers. Ya, they are a bad team.

I agree. Once you remove the "easy" we have 1st overall pick out of their rebuild they are left with Eberle, Shutlz and MP. Shultz fell to them.
For being a bottom team they have struck out in 2/3 round picks and also have no real solid role players or veterans.
Also, I don't see RNH as elite. He has the potential but to me he hasn't shown anything. He looks soft, and unwilling to engage in the play.

The Flames have 16 ROW compared to the Oilers' 14. The Oilers have scored only 62 ES goals in 41 games; less than every team in the NHL except for SJ, Florida, and New Jersey. Five of those goals came in their post-deadline blowout of the eviscerated Flames.

Thoroughly enjoyed this entire thread but no props to Hudler for an awesome play on Reinhart's first NHL goal? Not that he seems to need much help but he made Schultz look ridiculous and it was a great pass.
Congrats to Max too! Love the kid but I just wish he didn't look so much like Ryan Smyth. He's a few broken noses away from being a dead ringer.
Living here in "Oil Country" I have a bunch of Oiler fan friends so this win was a good one! Sitting at a pub last night with seven Oiler fans and the game on was fun - much more fun than the last time! Aside from the gloating it really is encouraging to see our youngsters play like that. What did someone say, seven players that were in Abbotsford at trade deadline? That is awesome!
I'd really like to get a youtube of Cammalleri knocking the puck away from Hall in the warmup along with the commentary! I really want to share it! If anyone knows a way I think we'd all appreciate it!
Are the Oilers ever a big greasy mess!

Brodie led the team in TOI too. Another nice thing to see!
