Classic how Cammi knocks the puck away and Hall wondering where the puck went

The knives are out in Edmonton
Quote:
The Oilers lost 4-1 to the Abbotsford Heat, masquerading as the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. With six farmhands in their lineup, with no Jarome Iginla, no Jay Bouwmeester, no Alex Tanguay, no Curtis Glencross, with Miikka Kiprusoff on the bench and not in net, they slapped the Oilers upside the head. Max Reinhart, the brother of Oil Kings junior captain Griffin Reinhart, had his first NHL goal, and fellow AHL farmhand Sven Baertschi had his first this season, while Mikael Backlund and Dennis Wideman had the others for the Flames. They were playing their second game in as many nights, supposedly playing out the string, while the Oilers were healthy and rested after a 3-1 setback to Phoenix last Wednesday, and they laid a bigger egg than the one in Vegreville.

It’s like a kid working at, say, Walmart, who continually straightens the store shelves when the manager is in the vicinity. It’s all a con. The Oilers conned us into thinking they were a playoff team with five straight wins, actually popping into eighth spot for maybe a day. Now they’ve lost five in a row, scored four goals in the last 300 minutes, and another lottery draft pick beckons.
|
Quote:
The party’s over folks, turn out the lights. If you thought the Oilers had even a glimmer of hope for their first playoff spot in seven years, it was extinguished here with a dispirited effort. They have 39 points, still in 12th place in the West, six points out of eighth, which is now held by Dallas at 45. Detroit and Columbus (one loss in their last 16 games) also have 45 and Phoenix has 43.

It's gold Jerry...GOLD!
"Be afraid Jones, MacKinnon and Barkov Be VERY afraid because #herecometheoilers."
"Hey Seth, welcome to Edmonton. There is your stall, there is your jersey and there are your hopes and dreams of winning going away"
"The losing culture lives on.
It's like herpes. We can't get rid of it. You can use an antiviral medicine for a short winning streak, then it flares back up with a bunch of losses to follow."
"Of all my years I've never experienced the feelings that I'm going through now. My respect and admiration is in decline and it's being replaced with hate and frustration."
Followed by
"I'm right with you. I can't believe that I've dedicated so much of my adult life to following this. I need a new hobby. Perhaps model making."

I didn't watch the game until 2:30 AM, because I was busy. That was friggen awesome. When your team plays like that, it's all good.
We do have a bunch of good secondary pieces. Reinhart, Horak, Arnold, Hanowski and Aliu along with Bouma will make up a great nasty 3rd/4th lines moving forward. You can just imagine how much of a pain in the butt that a line centered by either Reinhart or Horak with Aliu and Bouma will be.
Adding in one of the better forwards in this draft plus a couple other 1st round talent players on to Jankowski Gaudreau Baertschi etc. will mean that we'll be well on our way to a quick and good rebuild.
Also, Brodie looks like he's quickly becoming one of the best defensemen in the league.

I wouldn't go that far yet, but he keeps progressing nicely indeed. The guy just keeps impressing me, and watching him make those beauty passes for two goals while the gift to the hockey world, Justin Schultz, kept coughing up pucks in his own zone was a real treat.
Very impressed with Brodie, especially since he regularly plays 22-26 minutes now. I thought his ceiling would be a 2nd pairing defenseman, but now, I'm thinking he could easily be a #2 defenseman or a #3 at worst. Very encouraging. Also have to give credit to the coaching staff both this year and last year for pairing him with veterans all the time, you can see that he's learned a lot.

I'm thinking that Brodie is in the top 75 for D-men around the league. He's not in the upper tier yet, but he is getting better every game.

I hope Minnesota shows up on monday, cause it looks like our kids are going to be playing with their hearts on their sleeves the rest of the way. If we win any more games we'll be passing the likes of Nashville and Tampa, and then say goodbye to Barkov, Mack, Drouin or Jones..
Unless the hockey gods grant us the gift of the lottery.

Meh. Lindholm & Monahan could be as influential as the big 4 picks. If we end up picking 5-7 range there's a good chance a 1st-line centre is still on the board. The next Forsberg/Backstrom or Toews/Yzerman? Yes please.
I think it's more important to get the team rolling with positive momentum into next season than it is to tank the rest if the season. The last thing we need is to install a culture of Suck like those jokers up north.

couldn't agree more. The Coilers have sucked for so long, it seems they can't get the loser mentality out of their system. You could see it when they absolutely faltered this year when the games started to really matter ... I know I would be pissed as a Flames fan if that was the culture going forward. I'd rather have them go out there and play with your hearts on your sleeve, we won't win many more games anyway with our schedule. The confidence of Sven, Max, Backs, Brodie and a few others is just too important to just fold ... but I'm sure Hartley is too proud for that anyway.

Tough schedule sure, but the team that played last night is going to be tough for anyone to play against. We might pick up more points than many of us here want to... Hopefully there isn't too much of an outraged uproar

There are 8 teams under 40 points currently, and it's unlikely that we catch anyone above that threshold.
You have the top 8 prospects listed as
Jones D
Drouin LW
McKinnon C
Barkov C
Lindholm C
Nurse D
Monahan C
Nichushkin LW
Now, it wouldn't make the most sense for us to acquire Jones or Nurse, but it definitely would for several other teams that are in that under 40 point area like Florida, Colorado, Edmonton, Tampa and Philly.
Really, it would be hard to complain with the selection of any of those guys. They all have great potential, and would become our top prospect regardless of which forward they take.

That was an amazingly enjoyable game. All the teams we are chasing in the turtle derby won, which had a silver lining for a loss tonight. But this game, where all our young players stepped up and were dominant over the Oilers' collection of 1st rounders, well that made the win that much more sweet. Still in the mix for a high pick and beat up the Oilers in their own barn to crush their playoff hopes? Well that just is the perfect way to finish off the BOA for another meaningless season.

Also, this win continues the Flames' streak of NOT losing a season series to the Oilers - up to 10 years straight now???
Suck it Oilers. Something "special" indeed...

He's captain of the Edmonton Oil Kings, so I'm guessing it was an Oil Kings hat. That or he didn't want to upset the natives when he plays there.

Draft Pick

The reason the Flames did well.
I rarely see that many stick to stick passes from the Flames. It usually only takes one player to break a chain of passes. Iginla sucked at passing and usually ended the chain. He has a great shot though, that is it. Glad to see a Flames team that can throw the puck around.

The way the Oilers are looking, Oil Change could set a record as longest running TV series ever.

By the time the series is in it's 10th or so season the Oilers will be moved to Hartford or Seattle.
