You know from a trade perspective, what the Flames got was equivalent to negotiating rights to Hanowksi. The fact that the Flames managed to sign Hanowski makes the Iginla deal better. This is a solid prospect to have in the system. If his skating is good enough I think he can be an NHL player.

Initially I, like many other posters weren't that enthused with the return that Iginla got, however we still have to give these two a shot. I'm glad that Hanowski is getting A chance to play in the show. It's exciting as a fan because now we'll get to see what he's made of.

Exactly. I couldn't have said it better myself. We can go back to wallowing in pitty because our team sucks and didn't get a good return on Iginla if Hanowski and Agostino don't turn out to be solid players for the Flames. Until then, what is the point of looking at things pessimistically?

That was my problem with the reaction to the Iginla trade. Many people were extremely negative about the return, but had absolutely no clue "what they were made of". I guess if nobody had heard of the players it was a bad deal, right?

Very glad we're going to get a look at one of the pieces soon!

Well in fairness it was Jarome Frickin' Iginla, so yeah I'll admit I expected a known commodity, however I got over it quickly and am looking forward to what the new guys can bring.

Jarome "35 UFA with 10 goals" Iginla

the problem was most people thought we were trading 2004 Iginla, or acted like it anyway

Bolded what was really important. If Iginla was locked in for another two years, this trade would have been a disaster and the calls for Feaster's head would be legitimate. But the reality is, he's a UFA and and probably would have left us in the offseason. The fact that we were able to get a 1st and two decent prospects is more than most UFA's would get.

If Iginla had 2 years on his contract he would have been close to untradable. Between his NMC/his list & the salary cap there would be no buyers.

exactly. Too bad that Hanowski and Agostino will always be "those guys from the Iginla trade". I just hope everybody gives them a fair chance.

Oh and by the way, Iggy only has 1 goal and 4 points in 7 games with the Penguins. It's becoming obvious that he's not a franchise player anymore ... he's still good, but not the guy he was a few years ago. The faster we move on, the better. And honestly, watching a game like last night, I really don't miss him THAT much. Thought I'd miss him more on the ice, to be honest, but maybe it's just the excitement for youth and a new direction right now that does it for me.

All these people complaining that we didn't get a "known commodity" in return is really getting old. We got a first and a couple decent prospects. Did anyone read that 22 page pull out on iginla in the sun? In there was a print out from an article from December 21 1995 headlined jarome who? It was the same reaction when we traded big joe to Dallas, people were pissed we didn't get anyone good for him and it turned out we got a franchise player. Now I'm not saying these guys are a lock at becoming that but at least give them a shot before we bash the trade. Give your heads a shake

easy in hindsight, but Iggy didn't break out until 4-5 years later being on the team. we never know who in our prospect pool could break out. it's not uncommon we look at their junior resume and make assumption or expectation. but let's give them some time.

on Iggy's performance so far, i think he is the same Iggy we see in the last couple years - searching for top line centre (since Crosby is out, and finding chemistry with Malkin). it takes time too.

Well said, pretty much bang on how I feel too, one thing though is too any times our vets as a whole were inconsistent, like when Hartley was complaining how the team was "giving away goals". It made me realize 2 things, "They "the vets" just couldn't bring it anymore" it was another fail at the end of the season when we were in reach but came up short; And that yes, Iggy has indeed lost a step or 2 as ^ pointed out.

Me too. If his hair and beard is any indication of his style of play. He could be a pretty wild player:

Clarification on his contract status: http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=665740

Whether he plays a game or not, this is the first year of his ELC and he'll be an RFA at the end of next season. Playing this season will have some impact on arbitration and waiver eligibility, but not on his RFA/UFA status.
