This bugs the hell out of me.

A New Hampshire police chief was cited Friday for improperly storing his service firearm after a teenager used the weapon to commit suicide in the chief's home in March.

Danville Police Chief Wade Parsons allegedly left his firearm, a .40-caliber Glock 22 pistol, on top of a safe in his bedroom closet on March 11, said Rockingham County Attorney Jim Reams.
Parsons left the house to run errands, while the boy -- the 15-year-old son of the chief's girlfriend -- remained in the home.
"The service weapon was used by a juvenile to shoot himself while no one else was home,"

When Parsons returned, he discovered the boy's body, Reams said.
"There is no clear explanation (for the suicide)," Reams told CNN Friday. There had been no previous signs that the youth was troubled, Reams added.

Parsons was not charged in the youth's death

Am I crazy for thinking the chief isn't exactly telling the truth here? Lets reverse it to a police chiefs son found dead of a suicide at his girlfriends home...how long before there's a murder charge.

You are reaching for conspiracy theories after reading an article on the internet, not having any insight into the situation beyond a blurb on cnn.com. You have likely seen way to many episodes of CSI and Law and Order and think of yourself as an armchair detective from thousands of kilometres away... and yeah, kid who has been thinking about suicide and doesn't tell anyone sees a gun and decides to use it in order to shoot himself is a more likely conclusion than grand conspiracy.

This isn't actually all that unusual. A lot of the family/friends/co-workers of people who commit suicide "suddenly" will tell you they had no idea anything was wrong, anything out of the ordinary was going on. It's generally only sudden for those left behind - not so much for the person who kills themselves. Likely that kid had a plan of some kind for a while and this opportunity presented itself. I imagine that only thing sudden about his actions, at least for him, was the method - not the act.

I'm glad the Chief was cited for the unsecured weapon, though I think the fine should be much larger, and that he should not be allowed to carry his service weapon home with him anymore, and should have to undergo some sort of remedial weaponry training.
