If you can't shake it off then you take hockey fandom far too seriously. I've been an Oilers fan for 30+ years, have lived in Calgary for 10+ years and I can't say as I've ever lost a moment's sleep over the grief the Oilers get in this city (much of it richly deserved).

I lived in Edmonton for almost ten years and I can say that my experience was the exact opposite. Even went to a few games with Flames gear and nobody bothered us. Some of my friends cheered for the Flames during the cup run also...

In any case both Flames and Oilers fans can agree that the Canucks suck. Makes for good common ground.

Vancouver fans and media are just the absolute worst. Unless you live here you'll never fully understand how terrible they are.

Not much flack - intelligent Oiler fans (ha!) know better (given where the Oilers are) and for Canucks fans I am just deflecting.

One short year of being in the cellar is not that hard to take.

After the last loss to the Oilers is when the flak for me was at its highest, since then Edmonton has gone down faster than an Amsterdam prostitute after money has been exchanged.

I'm going to the game tomorrow and if the Flames win that should dash any Greaser hopes of making the playoffs. That will make the season worthwhile, seeing the look on their faces, if it happens.

I have taken absolutely nowhere near as much flak as I have delivered to Oilers fans over the past several years.

Nothing. San Jose is a pretty easy going area to be a foreign fan.

The reality of the Flames sucking has been setting in for 3 years now, so nothing really. It's not like everyone didn't see the tank coming two years ago.

Give me your phone number and I'll call you tomorrow after the game to taunt the crap out of you.

Seriously, I don't take sports too seriously. I almost never taunt anyone, unless they give it to me first. My brother-in-law is a Flames fan and he used to phone me after games they won. I have a standard barb for them and that put an end to it. Sports is a diversion to me, nothing more. I want my teams to win, but it's far down on my life priority list.

That's exactly how my Oilers acquaintances and I have co-existed for the past few years. I deliberately avoided laying it on thick, and making fun of how they took pride in their #1 picks, because both them and I knew deep down that the Flames would end up inadvertantly in a lottery position soon enough due to the course they set.

if you're self-deprecating about it, you'll only get the initial comments but not much else. fans of opposing teams will only push the issue if they see you're still in denial. I get tons of chuckles trading "we all suck" barbs with oiler fans at work. it's almost like we're hard-luck hobos keeping each others spirits up beside the fire barrel.

if you really want a rough ride though, try telling a leaf or oiler fan that their team isn't as good as the standings show, due to their fenwick close numbers. in fact, stats backlash is annoyingly trendy these days, I don't know why. makes my brain swell and increase my concussion risk.

Exactly. After the 8-2 loss I woke up to several texts on my phone from Oilers fans rubbing it in. One of them was from an old friend that I hadn't talked to in years. My comeback was for them to look at the upcoming Oilers schedule and they would be lucky to win more than 3 of their remaining games. Haven't heard peep since.

Besides the odd Facebook message from the ex-boyfriend, a Canucks fan, no flak. The guy down the hall at work is an Oilers fan and him and some other Oiler lawyer fans were having a good laugh in his office after the 8-2 loss. Yesterday, they weren't laughing much anymore. Mostly crying about how Hemsky sucks!

Yes, I have an eavesdropping problem.
