The ice was awful enough in a place like Philadelphia.
The game is going to be 5 hours long with all the ice repairs.

The average night time low during the winter in LA is around 9-12 degrees.
That's cold enough. It should work well.

Vegas had locusts.
I envision a roller hockey game on Venice Beach.

Maybe using synthetic ice. Everything else is fake in LA so why not the ice.

Totally possible, it's not like a hockey arena is below freezing.. I'd worry about sun exposure if anything but you can cover the ice during the day. They have a skating rink downtown Phoenix every winter.

I wonder what kind of chemicals they can add to the ice to make it freeze properly at a higher temp...? Neato.

Very few I would guess if any. None that I am aware of. Virtually any pollutant in water decreases the hydrogen bonding that makes water solid. Adding virtually anything to water lists the melting temperature (ie. Salt dissolves in water and boom, it needs to be even colder to freeze it)

Hopefully it works, and it did work in Vegas.
The NHL also tried it in Charlotte in 91 but the game was cancelled because of bad ice.

Apparently it will be played at night to avoid potential sun on the ice during the game. Dodger Stadium is tucked in Chavez Ravine, which usually has a constant cool wind in the evening. It gets pretty cold once the sun sets. They can make it work or the planning wouldn't be this far along. It won't be nearly as challenging as summer ice in Vegas.

I really don't like the idea of more than 1 US game per year. The NHL will kill the goose. Do 1 game in the US every year and a heritage classic in Canada every 2 years. I really don't want to see one in Calgary more than every 10 years otherwise they aren't special anymore and are just bad hockey.
The next one they should annouce is Winnipeg vs someone in their new stadium.

That sounds credible simply because Aaron Ward is not reporting this.

Does the downtown rink have a cooling system like an arena?

When Bettman was in SJ a year or two ago, he was asked about the possibility of a game in California and he pretty much said - no. That they won't consider any place where rain is a serious possibility. Winter is rainy season in California.
