It's got to be awful tempting for a senior or 4 year player, if he's any good, to wait for free agency. He'll still be on an entry contract but he can choose where he wants to go. In my mind it makes college draft picks less valuable.

The reason it doesn't happen very often is the best college players leave college before their senior year, so they only have the option of signing with the team that drafts him.
Most everyone who plays 4 years isn't high end to be worth the risk of turning down a guaranteed contract hoping another team takes a shot at him

Have no issues with another year at college, but as the guys on the Fan are saying you cannot help but be concerned that he pulls a Justin Schultz. Little left to prove at the college level.

Rhett seems to have a problem with it:
@FAN960Jason: Rhett on Gaudreau: "As good a chance as you'll ever have to make an NHL team next year, and you're not gonna take it? Scared." #Flames
@FAN960Jason: More Rhett on Gaudreau: "Who's he battling next year for a spot up front? Blair Jones? How much better can he get in college?" #Flames
@FAN960Jason: Agree or disagree, more Rhett: "Don't kid yourself. He's staying for the fun of it, and for the ease of his college life." #Flames

And perhaps he doesn't ever want to play for Calgary. Boston covets him, so he could get his degree and go play for a team he wants to play for.

Honestly it would have been a waste of a ELC year for us if he came out this year. He would have burnt off two years of his ELC before this team is remotely ready to go forward. I also think he will be the type of player that will compliment rather then carry a team in the NHL (I think you need to go in with tempered expectations).

I guess not every player wants to be a hack on the radio after their career is over, hey Rhett?

Right, because I think most people would agree an Ivy League education is a waste of time.

Yeah, Rhett comments are pretty dumb. If he wants to continue pursing a degree, good for him. Bonus if he gets to enjoy the lifestyle along with it. There's no rush for him to go pro yet. He'll have something to show for his years in college and it could benefit him for life after hockey, which takes up more than half of your life.

BC isn't Ivy League, but I agree with your point. Rhett is way off base here. It's unfortunate that the sports talk format rewards strong opinions more than intelligent ones.

I worry about our all of our longer term prospects signing. Really they need to add a clause that if a team offers the rookie max a player has to sign with that team. If the team that drafted them, wants them to play for them, and will pay them the max amount they can a player shouldn't get to choose to go somewhere else.

Off Topic, but interesting tidbit...There were 4 original IVY league schools; Harvard, Yale , Princeton and Dartmouth. IV(Y) comes from the roman numeral for 4.
Brown, Columbia, U of Penn and Cornell were later added.

I actually somewhat agree with Rhett...not the whole "its easier" stuff but that this is a huge red flag moving forward.
Once his season ends next year the Flames have a very small window to sign him, and should he decide not to ink a deal...will be a FA and free to go where he likes.
RW points out that had he decided to go pro this year, he would have little competition for a starting spot. He's right. And the whole "let the kid get his degree" stuff is non applicable at this point, because even if he goes back this season, he still wont be graduating for another year after that. Not to mention he can go play pro and get his degree at any point in the future.
Not real good news here IMO.

Man, the knives come out pretty quick for Warrener here...
I'm not sure what is worse though, a guy having an opinion or ripping a guy for having an uneducated opinion, based on your own equally uneducated opinion.

He isn't a UFA next year if he doesn't sign, he would still have the option of playing his 4th year and then going UFA but he is the Flames property until then and no other team can communicate with him. So it's a ways down the road
So unless he wants to play a 4th year at college, the only team he can sign with is Calgary. If he goes back for his 4th year, that is when the red flags start popping up

We don't even know what Feaster told Gaudreau. If Feaster said he'd like Gaudreau to spend a year in the AHL if he went pro now, nothing that Rhett said would even be relevant. He's just doing the typical sports talk move of making assumptions to fit whatever "outrageous" opinion he feels like spouting off about.
