Ovechkin tied for first in goals
Looks to have found his mojo again.
So much for people saying he's washed up

Took Oates over half the season to put Ovechkin and Backstrom on the same line. Happy for him, hope he keeps it up.
If a healthy Caps team gets into the playoffs, they could be dangerous. Green has rejuvinated his scoring as well, however Erat, Ward, and Laich are now injured which sucks for them.

Not unusual for a team with a new coach to take the first half of the season to get up to speed which is where the Caps would be right now in a normal season.

Were people saying he was washed up or just pointing out that he wasn't close to Crosby anymore and not an elite level guy?
I am not sure that 40 games in which he is still brutal defensively and selfish changes a whole lot in terms of the elite level guy but I guess it is better than him coasting and putting up a season of 60-ish points.

Good, the league's more exciting when he's playing to his abilities.

Wouldn't shock me when their careers are done that Ovechkin be the better player than Crosby and with better stats.

Precisely what I came in to say. The world's a better place when Ovechkin's scoring goals sliding upside-down with no stick.

Crosby needs to stop being injured and all will be right with the world again.

I don't think this has been true since their rookie seasons (where age difference was a prime factor), Crosby's team accomplishments and his career ppg (1.41 vs 1.23) are way ahead of Ovie. Sid's also more towards the beginning/middle of his prime and Ovie seems to be towards the end of his.

I'd beat up a puppy to get Ovechkin on the Flames. Contract and all.

His production in the playoffs is virtually identical to his regular season production. It also compares favorably to pretty much every other player in the league. Here are the pts/g and g/g rankings in the playoffs since 05-06 (minimum 20 games played):
Points (Ovechkin ranks 3rd in the league):

Goals (Ovechkin ranks 1st in the league):

Not that he doesn't have holes in his game and he probably isn't worth his contract, but his playoff production is still elite, especially given that he's faced some of the East's best defensive teams and goalies in his career (NYR 3 times, BOS, and MTL with Halak playing amazing).

a guy who has scored 722 points in 592 career games is someone you don't want? I get he doesn't play defense but the guy is one of the greatest pure scorers in NHL history. He could most likely go down as the greatest Russian hockey player once he retires.
