Needed to be a kick save.
Least it was a well hit ball, not a blooper.

Even though it's over, they'd absolutely let him attempt it. There have been 23 perfect games in the history of baseball in almost 400,000 games. So it has been done 23 times in about 800,000 attempts. The odds of him being in the same situation again are really small.
The Houston fans were disgusting after Darvish gave up the hit. I'm fine if you don't want to see your team have a perfect game thrown against them, but to give him middle fingers and taunt the Texas fans is garbage. You still lose 7-0.

Had an idea!

They need something to care about considering they will compete for last in the MLB this year.

His pitch count ended up being fairly reasonable, so no decision was necessary, but I bet a lot of managers would have pulled him at 120 or so on the first game of the year. Team success should trump individual success.
And the Astros are not really fielding a competitive team in any way, shape or form, so it would be a pretty tainted perfect game at that. Their payroll is about half of the New York Islanders.

I can see them wanting to pull the pitcher, being that it's the second game of the season, but I still believe they'd let him go as long as he wants to be out there. Matt Cain's perfect game was 125 pitches (most in history for a perfect games), and coincidentally against the Astros. It was his 13th start of the season, so he was likely in the best shape of the season.
From looking at Darvish's 2012 game logs, he threw 121 pitches in his third start and in his first six starts had 97 pitches as his lowest total. From starts 11-24 his lowest total was 105, highest 123 and median of 113. He's a guy who sounds like he can handle a high pitch count.
Edwin Jackson's no hitter took him 149 pitches in June 2010. I was surprised he didn't need surgery after that, but then again, Christy Mathewson pitched three complete game shutouts, on a Monday, Thursday and Saturday in the 1905 World Series. Apples to oranges yes, but it's a cool factoid I like to bring up.

Bumgarner pitching a gem too. Only two hits, no walks through 8.

Finny - have kinda quit following the Padres since Adrian left town, but am curious to your thoughts on Andrew Cashner. Do you think he will get back into the rotation, as from what I have read, he is starting the year in the bullpen. Guy has an electric arm with a high SO rate.

I didn't like the trade to get Cashner because I thought Rizzo deserved more time with the big club and now the Cubs are seeing some dividends.
They had Cashner in the bullpen originally and tried to stretch him to a Starter. Not against that but he is really only effective for a few innings and then the control goes away. They have him right now as an LRP in the bullpen and I think thats best. He lives on that 101mph fastball though, if he could muster a wicked change-up with control then wow he could be a beast. But I think he mixes between fastball and slider.

I turned the ball game on excited to see Darvish pitch for the first time this year. After the 3rd I said "I have work in the morning and am kinda tired, I'll go to bed after Huston gets on base".
I didn't crawl into bed until midnight. That was an awesome thing to watch, if only my Rangers could get that final out!
Also what 24 K's from our starters through three games. Not too shabby, although they were all Astros.

Short of the catty comments about Shaw Direct, what is their deal with not carrying the MLB Network, or heck, MLB Extra Innings? It's killing me.

And Smyly retires 12 straight against what used to be the New York Yankees to finish the save. Wonder how many four-inning saves there were in MLB last year.

I had to look up definitions of saves, but it seems that as long as you pitch 3 or more innnings, it did not matter how much you are up by as long as you finish the game. So, I'd guess it happens every once in a while, the long guy will finish off a game in a blowout.

Wes Littleton came in to save the game for the Texas Rangers on August 22, 2007. It's was touch and go for a while there, the Rangers barely hung on to win 30-3.

But that was only a 3 inning save! If he went another inning he would have blown it.

The Astros are up to their usual tricks. After striking out 43 times in their first three games, they have 12 more thru 8 innings tonight. At this rate they will break the previous season mark for team strikeouts as a hitting team....by game 107.
