Couldn't we move Drouin to centre if we drafted him?

Good to see Feaster or Hartley has a CP account.

Well, this is Drouin's first season NOT playing center it seems. He was converted this year to play with MacKinnon.

I was just poking fun. But didn't know he played center, know when this was? Weird because Mackinnon was playing right wing prior to be converted to center.

If all goes right we could be in 30th by tomorrow night.
Was funny to watch the Jets fall from 3rd in the East to 10th in the East last night.

Honestly, we can't go wrong with any of the top six or seven....
Seth Jones / Nathan MacKinnon / Jonathan Drouin / Alexsander Barkov / Valery Nichushkin / Sean Monahan / Elias Lindholm....
...we've got some pretty good options where we are. I'm super excited.

Well, they are all above average, but I see 3 distinct tiers.
MacKinnon/Drouin/Jones
-
Barkov/Nichushkin
-
Monahan/Lindholm

Actually, you can. Many high first-rounders have failed in the NHL.

I think there's two tiers. Mackinnon/Drouin/Jones/Barkov/Nichushkin then Monahan/Lindholm

Agree with tinordi here. Nichushkin is only being held down in preference because he is russian. This guy has great speed for his size and elite skills.
Barkov might be a tad slower but has shown all the elite skills and hockey sense that teams look for in a top 3 prospect.

If we draft third and both Jones and MacKinnon are gone I wouldn't be surprised to see take Barkov.

The only guy I would really be really disappointed with is if they draft Nichushkin. Way too much of a flight-risk for the Flames to spend their highest pick in franchise history. I'm not even crazy about Barkov just because of the Russian name. But I'm pretty Russian averse, so don't mind me.
Besides, this is doesn't seem like the draft year where you need to be a smarty-pants and take chances. There's plenty of talent to go around. Take a chance in a crappy year, not one that seems to be full of great options. Even if we get another Top-10, I wouldn't spend it on Nichushkin.

Agreed. The Mackinnon/Drouin/Jones top 3 just seems like CHL bias to me - everything I've read says Barkov is clearly at that level. No difference in talent and he's producing big time in a men's league.
Nichuskin actually seems like the best forward in the draft - the only reason he's not #1 is the Russian factor and his KHL contract. The team that drafts him #6 or #7 overall probably gets the best player in the draft if he commits to playing in North America. It's a risk, but worth it if the Flames somehow got hot and finished that high.

CHL players will always be favoured over those in European leagues.
I prefer North American developed players.

It's not worth going for the player who might be a 95, when there are plenty of guys who are a 90 who seem much more of a sure-thing. There are no guarantees that any one of them will be great, but the Flames just cannot screw this draft up. They have to play it safe...even if it means you get a marginally lower-skilled player.
If we were already stocked up with great prospects, sure, go nuts. But without any real elite prospects to speak of (besides maybe Sven), they don't have any goodwill to take that chance right now.

Does anyone foresee TSN ripping into the Flames no matter who they pick 1st overall for going "off the board"?
I can just see it now. Flames pick 2nd, MacKinnon and Drouin are still available, Flames pick MacKinnon, Ferraro et al proceed to say "Wow... not sure I would have done that. Given that the Flames need a dynamic goal scorer, I don't think MacKinnon will ever be that guy in Calgary. This is a bit off the board." Similarly, if Calgary were to pick Drouin all we would hear from TSN is "Wow... given that the Flames badly need a centre prospect, I'm not sure I would have went off the board with that pick. Given that the Flames already have Baertschi and Gaudreau in the system, they needed to have picked a centre here. I'm not sure I like what Feaster and company are doing here."

Not sure I really agree with moving Mackinnon to the wing. I've watched him play a ton, his two way play is really underrated and he is very strong on the draw. He's a right-handed center - the rarest type, insane speed and underrated vision and playmaking skills (Drouin always seems to get all the attention in those areas).
He will be in the NHL next year and will be a fan favorite wherever he goes.

If we're number 3 I don't think there's anyway TSN could rage on us if we chose Drouin/MacKinnon/Jones and even Barkov.

Regardless of who the Flames pick and where they pick, personally I think they need to pick someone who can be in the lineup next season simply to keep the fans interested. It's most likely not going to be a great season and having a young star to cheer for will help appease the fan base IMO.
