I wonder what religion they're going to pick? I bet it's Wiccan.
So they are saying NC govt is going to make it's own religion, or is going to pick one, like Southern Baptist and say this one is the only one they recognize?

I hope NC has the good sense to put this vote to the people in an anonymous online fashion, so the likes of 4chan and Reddit sabotage the votes by picking Westboro Baptist as NC's new state religious sect, requiring these short-sighted idiots to re-evaluate this stupid concept of a state religion.

Know what is annoying? Those religious people that try and convert you.

Know what else is annoying? The atheists that go around and tell you that your religion is stupid.

Everyone should just STFU.

I'm sorry but this is one ongoing battle that is pretty much going to be going on until the earth is swallowed by the sun. Everybody wants to know how we came to be, why we are here, how we were created and how the earth and the universe came to be and more importantly what happens to us once we die. Both sides will level their arguments and both sides will fight for what they believe in and what they know is real. I'm not on any side in this case (If i had to choose i'd lean towards Atheism), but to say that everyone should STFU about an important topic like this is pretty pointless.

Point taken - STFU should be replaced with "Stop being a hypocrite" I guess.

I believe in freedom. I believe that everyone should be able to choose his or her own religion. I believe that people should not have to be 'attacked' for their choices, especially since it is a personal nature.

I don't like religious people from any religion at all to come into my face and tell me that I should join there religion, and that I made a 'wrong choice' by choosing to be atheist or to be part of a different religion.

Talk about religion, sure. People just have no respect either way. Atheists think that people who believe in religion are 'idiots' or 'backwards' - and that is fine. Religious people think that anything other than their religion is backwards and idiotic.

I just find the unnecessary confrontation of people dogging each other's beliefs (or lack of belief) is stupid. I can respect any religion - as long as people are free to enter into, and leave on their own accord.

I myself am not 'really' religious. Brought up in a Catholic background, but I don't practice nor do I preach. I also don't knock down Islam, Judaism, other Christan denominations, Buddhism (and derivatives) or even tribal religions.

STFU for me = why do people feel the need to point out other people's choices as 'misguided' or 'wrong'. If you don't share that faith, cool. Move along. As long as they aren't getting in your face, cool. As long as that religion is not one based on hatred, or forcing people to do what is not right, great.

People do find relief in religion. When they have nothing else to hope for, at least there is that to give them some measure of support or relief. Religion is not 'stupid', or for the brainless.

I detest any side - from any religion or lack thereof, to go to another person and state that their religion is false, or stupid. People should have absolute right to choose their faith unhindered from anyone else in society AS LONG AS there faith is not hindering anyone else in society. Why people feel the need to go out of their way and jump on someone's faith (or whatever else they may see different about someone) is beyond me.

Seems there is just a huge lack of respect that goes on from all sides - people trying to 'convert' you into a religion, and people that go out of their way to say religion(s) are stupid.

Ha North Carolina also thinks it's okay for thousands of people to drive and park huge trucks directly on the beach, a few feet away from the water. It's a good thing there a few areas that prohibit it but really it's pretty horrendous. And for some of these idiots running over the wildlife is something to do for fun.
It's amazing how different NC and SC are. So much for "the Carolinas".

Freedom of Religion and freedom of speech does not equal freedom from criticism, it drives me insane that people don't get this. Yes you are entitled to hold any belief you want, and others are free to criticize you for it.

No one forced you to come read a thread titled Godless Apostate, you chose to and then got offended at what it contained. That's like going to an R rated movie and then being upset that it contains adult content, and because that offends you they shouldn't even make movies like that anymore.

You say you don't knock down other religions, know why? Because you are in the religion of majority in North America, Christianity. If overnight Islam became the dominant religion in Canada and those beliefs began influencing public policy decisions I guarantee you would be singing a different tune.

I agree, people do find relief and comfort and community and many good things in religions. There is nothing wrong with that, they should be free to worship how they see fit. The problem is when these beliefs effect others through government policy that often fly's in the face of science and reason.

I do hope you see the difference between someone going into your face and you participating in a thread on a discussion forum though, because they are vastly different.

(And I guarentee you it isn't the atheists or Muslims that are trying to create a state religion in NC).

Have you read the main forum at all? People not having respect for other people has nothing to do with religion, there's just a large portion of jerks in the world.

If people can't even discuss something as inconsequential as hockey without resorting to name calling and contempt, how can you possibly expect it with something as fundamental as religion?

Your expectation needs to be altered. Don't expect anyone from any religion to behave a certain way, because there's always jerks. Rather ignore those and just interact (or not) with those that aren't.

And this entire forum is based around a group of people who think cheering for another team makes one idiotic.

Humans have a very deep tribal instinct, that they self-arrange into tribes and view "foreigners" to the tribe differently is expected and something to overcome, not surprising.

Sure, the only confrontation here is voluntary. North Carolina is where it has the clause in their constitution that prohibits atheists from holding office and where they're trying to have a state religion (unnecessary confrontation).

Because sometimes other people are wrong (and sometimes I'm wrong). Having discussions with other people is a basic human need, and discussions around things everyone agrees on are usually boring. Humans are curious and want to learn about the world around them, changing pre-existing beliefs is key to learning, and that'd be impossible if no one ever challenged what someone else thought was right.

I do agree there are good and bad ways to go about it, but see the jerks comment above; there'll always be people who don't go about it the way you want to.

From a constitutional standpoint I think this is entirely unenforceable, correct?
