From a hockey standpoint he has basically nothing left to prove at that level.. so it would just make sense to move up now, but on the other hand he's gotta put on some mass yet, so another year there would give him time to do that. Yet he could also do that while with the Heat.

If Gaudreau is 5'9 170 now an interesting comparable (size wise) is Pat Kane who currently (5 years older than Johnny) is listed as 5'11 180.

A year or so from now and its not inconceivable he'll be closer to small for a young NHLer and not tiny.

Edit: looking it up on google, Kane was apparently 5'10, 162lbs when drafted in 2007.

A bad comparison would be me. I was about 5'8" when I was 17... and 19 and 21 and 50...

I'd like to see Gadureau at World Hockey Championship, see how he does against men. That should really tell us how far he is.

I'm super high on Gaudreau but I'm worried about him turning pro before he is physically strong enough. I think his skill level is already NHL quality, but he just seems so small. RNH was rushed and I thought he really suffered with injuries, his growth may be stunted by the Oilers by rushing him in.

I believe he can as long as he'd pay all of his own expenses for the whole tournament; hotels, food, equipment. I think that was the case when he attended rookie camp as well.

he played at the World Jrs, an IIHF tournament. Can't see why the senior men's tournament would be any different

I like Gaudreaus chances, he seems to have the buzz around him.

For what its worth. The only 5 Sophomores have won the award.

I don't know, American colleges use their own made up rules for who is an amateur. As if that has any bearing, except for their own personal uses to control athletes, any more.

Neal Broten had a solid NHL career and, until Selanne exploded with 10 goals in 10 periods to blow it away, Broten was in a decent race with him for Rookie of the Year honours.

Stauber played some in the NHL, I remember him. Hrkac and Broten were fine players also. If Johnny turns out like Broten we'll be very happy.

Sorry I guess I should have worded that better, Only Miller has become a "top Line" player in the NHL.

It would be great if Gaudreau wins the Baker, and comes here to play 1000 games as a quality 2ndary scorer.

Thats kinda where my hopes are for him right now.

Neal Broten did have a very solid career and he was of similar size to Gaudreau as well. But I think you may have him confused with someone else as he was well past being a rookie by the time Selanne came into the NHL.

That's 923 points in the late 80's early 90's. Today that translates into like 700.

You are right - the old memory is getting foggy.

Broten fought with Hawerchuk in 81-82

I cannot remember who fought with Selanne - but I'll figure it out

Edit: Joe Juneau was runner up to Selanne
