The only reviewer who I would see a movie based on his reviews alone. Not all were movies I loved but none were movies I hated.

RIP for sure.

I had no idea that he won a Pulitzer Prize. Pretty cool.

Two thumbs up! Rest easy Roger.

Roger reviews my favorite movie:

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/...1010362%2F1023

The genius is not in how much Stanley Kubrick does in “2001: A Space Odyssey,'' but in how little. This is the work of an artist so sublimely confident that he doesn't include a single shot simply to keep our attention. He reduces each scene to its essence, and leaves it on screen long enough for us to contemplate it, to inhabit it in our imaginations. Alone among science-fiction movies, “2001'' is not concerned with thrilling us, but with inspiring our awe.

Only a few films are transcendent, and work upon our minds and imaginations like music or prayer or a vast belittling landscape. Most movies are about characters with a goal in mind, who obtain it after difficulties either comic or dramatic. “2001: A Space Odyssey'' is not about a goal but about a quest, a need. It does not hook its effects on specific plot points, nor does it ask us to identify with Dave Bowman or any other character. It says to us: We became men when we learned to think. Our minds have given us the tools to understand where we live and who we are. Now it is time to move on to the next step, to know that we live not on a planet but among the stars, and that we are not flesh but intelligence.

Read more of his blog posts - he is a very good writer.

And I always like his reviews because he said he would review it with the intended audience in mind. If it was a Summer Blockbuster action flick he would review it as how he thought those people would enjoy it. If it was a chick flick, that would be different.

Good Luck Roger, I'll see you at the movies.
Yup. Looks like things took a turn for the worse much faster than he thought.
What he wrote was amazing.

I agree with you about how he wrote reviews for the intended audience. Even for foreign movies, his understanding of them was amazing. You ever sit down and try to write a movie review that isn't piss poor? Even in your head? It's incredibly hard.

It's great because he actually made reference to it in a review once.

As chance would have it, I have won the Pulitzer Prize, and so I am qualified. Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks.

This is sad. My sister and I would watch Siskel and Ebert all the time when we were kids. Was one of our favorite shows. Their year-end shows were always the best.

RIP Roger.

Very sad. The man was my favourite film reviewer. I am glad that he got to spend so many years doing what he loved which was watching movies and that he was remained an extremely positive and happy person right to the end.

RIP Roger Ebert

Exactly. I always went with "If Ebert gave it 2 stars or more it is likely passbale to great entertainment".

Statement from Chaz Ebert:
Quote:
"I am devastated by the loss of my love, Roger -- my husband, my friend, my confidante and oh-so-brilliant partner of over 20 years. He fought a courageous fight. I've lost the love of my life and the world has lost a visionary and a creative and generous spirit who touched so many people all over the world. We had a lovely, lovely life together, more beautiful and epic than a movie. It had its highs and the lows, but was always experienced with good humor, grace and a deep abiding love for each other.

"Roger was a beloved husband, stepfather to Sonia and Jay, and grandfather to Raven, Emil, Mark and Joseph. Just yesterday he was saying how his grandchildren were "the best things in my life." He was happy and radiating satisfaction over the outpouring of responses to his blog about his 46th year as a film critic. But he was also getting tired of his fight with cancer, and said if this takes him, he has lived a great and full life.

"We were getting ready to go home today for hospice care, when he looked at us, smiled, and passed away. No struggle, no pain, just a quiet, dignified transition.

"We are touched by all the kindness and the outpouring of love we've received. And I want to echo what Roger said in his last blog, thank you for going on this journey with us."

Brown Bunny....after the film was edited thanks in part to several bad reviews from Cannes Gallo re-edited it and Ebert then gave it 3 stars.

Huge fan of Roger Ebert, will dearly miss his reviews, and huge fan of every incarnation of his shows, but I have to laugh at all of the sappy cartoons of him and Gene:

It was never the same once Gene was gone, they were pretty good to watch, especially when they strongly disagreed.

The show wasn't the same without the two of them, but Ebert's writing was as good as ever right up until the end.
