Default Flying under the radar

So I've been thinking, with Iginla likley not coming back to the Flames after this season, what will come of the Flames? With the 3 big names gone, there likely won't be any hype about this team anymore except when being blown out in games...

My question now is are the Flames going to be left alone and quietly go about themselves and rebuild/retool their team without the distraction of the media and analysts? Or will this team still get the attention it once had with the likes of Iggy, Kipper and Bouw still on the team.

We will still get lots of attention. TSN needs somebody to poop on.

So the Flames are basically the laughing stock of the League now instead of the Oilers or Islanders?

I think this is essentially true, but once you hit rock bottom, there's no place to go but up.

I'm not a calgarian... of course the local media is gonna be rough on the team until they start winning, but I think that the national media bashing has peeked and will be in decline moving forward.

The nat'l media has been laughing at the flames for the last year or two, but now that the full rebuild is on, they are at least on the right track now.

Ownership is committed. They are willing to spend... a few smart moves and a but of luck and the flames are right back in it in a couple of years. I think the media was outraged that management refused to admit that they were not contenders - continuing to go for it against all odds.

I think it's only gonna get better from here.

The media swallowed Edmonton's crap, hook, line and sinker.

Not for us. The media will **** all over this team.

I suspect it was Daryll Sutter's complete contempt for the media circus, but whatever the reason, the sports media in Canada has a grudge against the Flames.

They will eat us alive. Mark my words. If this team doesn't win the cup in 2 years, we will start hearing about the 'failed rebuild' in Calgary.

I used to think it was just CP paranoia and bias, but over the last few years I'm more convinced that its a real phenomenon.

The Flames will draft top 3, so the focus from the media will be on whomever they draft. The media and league at large will still laugh at the Flames, because they're a Canadian team and they'll need to give them some coverage/commentary.

Don't count the Oilers out of laughingstock-land yet.

Sure, they're on a hot little run, but a mere couple weeks ago they were playing worse than the Flames are now. And the shortened season tends to come with a few anomalies (if say, they squeak in which I still doubt), cause teams don't have to keep playing at a high level for a full 82 games.

There's still no reason not to say they won't have another typical back half collapse next season when we're back to playing a full 82. This is why I also don't buy into Toronto, Winnipeg being 'bonafide' playoff teams either.

This 48 game season is going to delude a lot of borderline teams and their fans.

The flames are in for a rough go. It will be nice to add a high end prospect this summer that will hopefully be ready right away. Sven likely plays the whole year on the big club and makes an impact. If Johnny hockey signs he could be a feel good story?

The flames are entering a period when the kids will be the focus. We are going to be a doormat for a couple years but hopefully we turn it around quicker than our neighbors to te north

I think much of this is brought on by the overhyping and unrealistic expectation by the Flames organization. The fact is it will probably take a good 3 to 5 years before we ice a decent competitive team, barring phenomenally lucky circumstances...money alone won't do it.

Who gives a crap if people ''laugh at us'', what is this, high school where people's opinions matter? If fans/media want to crap all over the team and mock us, let them. That shouldn't affect what our management does.

This whole ''laughing stock of the league'' is some bullcrap made up by paranoid fans who simply feel bad their team didn't meet expectations. It really doesn't matter what TSN, SN, The Sun, etc think about us.

The Flames were the darlings of media and TSN coming out of the lockout and the year after.

The only time they have been "crapping" on the team is now that the team has been in not only deniable but almost defiant F you denial about the state of the team.

There is no bias against the Flames and the media doesn't hate the team they just don't have the closeness or rose colored glasses of fans.

Weird, eh? What could have happened with the Flames over the last few years to inspire such contempt from the media?

Maybe it's missing the playoffs with a cap team for four years and not recognizing the need for a rebuild until the team completely bottomed out. Just throwin' it out there.

Fully agree. Up until and including the Deadline in which Sutter picked up Olli and Leopold they were on the flames side. That deadline day, TSN was basically handing the flames the Stanley Cup.

The media started doubting the flames that summer when Sutter thought he could win with an all defence team and 4th liners playing in the top 6.

After the Dion trade and flames missed the playoffs most media thought it was time for a rebuild. After years of refusing by the ownership, the shaking of the heads from media became laughter. I don't blame them at all, this year i laughed at the flames as much as the media.

It will take a couple of good drafts and the media will start to come back to the flames. They will still have the odd remark of "should have done it 2 years earlier" and rightfully so. In 3-4 years, if drafts go well, the media will be talking about the flames like they do with the chumps up North.
