Erat is one of the most skilled shooters and danglers in the NHL. He's also very solid on his skates at 200lbs. Think a much better version of Huselius. Erat will do very well playing along with other offensively minded players in Washington. You have to look a little beyond Erat's stats, as he plays for Nashville.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment of Erat. I think he is vary comparable to Stempniak. And my point was lamenting that we would have been happy to give a mid level forward +. Although it seems McPhee leans more to your side and is way overvaluing Erat.

Not to pile on, but how do you watch that video and say he's like Huselius let alone a better version of Huselius? Huselius was finesse, that video just shows one timers and nice breakaway goals (!= dangles).

Re: Forsberg - unless he plays in the NHL, WSH wins the trade. This is a 'right here right now' trade.

Agreed! I would like to know why the Caps gave up on Forsberg and why they felt trading him was the best thing to do. If Forsberg lives up to expectations this could turn in to one of the Cap's worst trades ever.

Nashville has always been decent with no talent, they'll be a .500 team the rest of the way IMO.

Yep, he is extremely underrated. I don't think Washington was looking for a random 50 point player. Erat has a lot of intangibles and a great contract (and nowadays, contract value means a lot - I like Camalleri, but his contract wasn't fetching the same as Erat's).

I also don't think Nashville was eager to trade him. He has been the face of their franchise for a long time. He has more than 700 games with them.

I still think Nashville made out well for the future, but in the present, Erat is a pretty valuable player.

Erat is a decent NHL'er and might be better with a change of pace. I remember he used to light it up all the time when he played with the Rebels. Still an overpayment though.

Angelo espisito had a similar trajectory. Touted to highly, dropped during his draft year, traded for Hossa. Never played in the NHL. If a team is willing to give up their top prospect for a mid level player there are probably red flags. I would have perferred washingtons first over forsberg.

Guys Filip Forsberg is not an A+ level prospect. He projects to be a good but not elite player which is fine and all but I don't see anything horrible about getting back a proven, solid player in Erat for a guy that doesn't project to be a high scoring NHL player.

Projected top 5 in the draft..dropped to 11th.traded before ever setting foot on NHL ice.

And yes, perhaps GM George McPhee could have gotten more had he waited until the summer to shop Forsberg fully to the league. You see, I believe the Caps were going to trade Forsberg at some point no matter what, internally souring on the prospect, a player they no longer viewed as a top center in the making.

Scouts I’ve spoken with have mixed opinions. Some still view him as a top center in the making, at least a No. 2, but others are concerned by his foot speed. The latter is what concerned Washington.

This kid is anything but a sure bet at this point and it's not out of the question in a couple of years this trade may have been won by the Capitals depending on how the team fares in the next couple of seasons with Erat in the lineup and how well he plays with more talent around him than at any other time in his NHL career. As of today it looks like a fair trade for both parties.

Lets face it too, this is the Capitals last year in the South East Division too. Ovechkin is 27 years old soon to be 28 and they can get the #3 seed by adding a guy like Erat now. This might be their best chance to get home ice for a round or two in the playoffs and make something happen.
