If he thinks he can't honor an extension and play up the level that would be expected of him, then good on him for being HONEST. Honest with himself, ownership, GMs and the fans. There aren't too many players like that these days.
I'm at a loss for words, but I'm sure others will agree with me. You're only upset because a trade didn't happen. Try to look at the big picture. Try to look at what has been accomplished and given by this great goaltender.

Good for Kipper. Retire a Flames. I love it!

Being traded is part of the job, kid or no kid.

Give me a break, I don't care if he has a family, to me he's just an asset. Get off your high horse.

This thread has been a reminder that pretty much every fanbase is the same. Each have it share of good apples, and bitter ones.
I can understand the ones that don't like what Kipper did. But the ones who completely filped their respect for him I find are really over blowing the magnitude of this. Considering what he did for the franchise, and the honest return the Flames would get if they were to trade him, and it's something that's in the best interest of the Flames to respect Kipper wishes from a PR point. Especially when Flames integrity is in the basement of the league currently.

That would be very unfortunate. I am not happy about this lack of trade, regardless of whatever flimsy PR excuse is given by Kipper, but nothing he may or may not have done here warrants him getting boo'd. This fanbase is definitely better than that, and I expect that they will show it tonight.

Follow the logic here...its quite simple.

I know that, but if the rumor had never come out, teams wouldn't have been worried about the extension. The rumor last week hurt the Flames. It may or may not be Kippers fault, I don't know.

Has it been brought up that Smithson was in the delivery room when he got the call that he was being traded today?

And every fanbase is the same in thinking it's unique and 'better' than the others.
The amount of ridiculous baiting and laughing at the Oilers fans for cheering high draft picks should make some reflect on that same phenomenon happening here.

I am not saying the Kipper wasn't a great goalie. Its been known for years that he is a little "different". Plus, even if he was to retire at the end of the season, some teams are willing to give up assets on a rental.
|
I am pretty sure that if he retired immediately upon being traded, the league (and the other team involved) would have to get involved somehow. I think that it is much more ethical to be up front and say "yeah - I'll just pack it in before I'll uproot my family to be a rental, so don't bother trying to trade me."
Not knowing anything more about his personal life other than that he's already got kids, and the most recent had complications, being a playoff rental is probably the worst thing that could happen to him personally right now. And if he has reservations about signing an extension at his age because he's not sure he could live up to the expectations, then there really isn't anything to negotiate.
If faced with his (reported) options of uprooting and/or being away from his family for a few months under the circumstances, or getting an extension that he's not confident with, I'd pick retirement too.

I'm with you on this one. Hockey is a business first and for fans that business is a good team. he's not helping us in that department right now.

No.
The Leafs would have prior knowledge of the possibility of retirement and would have traded for him anyway.
Buyer beware.
Most likely, the Leafs would insist on the deal being conditional on Kiprusoff reporting and the Flames would likely agree that would be a reasonable condition. Or, they'd just ask him beforehand, which they evidently did, and he saves everyone a lot of trouble and says "no" ahead of time.

The only thing we do know is that Toronto was given permission to talk to Kipper, and Kipper said he's reluctant to sign an extension because he isn't convinced he could deliver on his end of the deal.
Him questioning his ability impacts only 1 thing; his decision if he wants to sign an extension. Which is his right. If Toronto decides that trading for Kipper is dependent on the extension, then that's Toronto's right.
|
It became public knowledge that he had at the very least told Feaster that he needs to be confronted before any trade was made. If we knew that, the other 29 GM's had to have knows it as well. If you're another GM, without hearing that, why would you need to get a guaranteed extension when he's already signed for another year?
I would put good money on the extension requirement being a result of he and his agents requirements. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but that's how I see it right now.
Quote:
I doubt you're saying that Kipper should have agreed to sign an extension even if he didn't want to just so the Flames could get a pick, but that's the only way that Kipper is "costing" the Flames a pick.
|
No I'm not saying that at all, you're right, sorry if I gave that impression. Just disagree on the first part which leads us to him having to speak to other teams GM's and explain himself in such a way. At this point, yes, I agree he shouldn't lie to other teams and give them the impression he'll sign long term only to retire.
