As many others have said, Miikka is one of my all-time favourite players. I am happy that it seems like he'll play his last game in our jersey.
The fact that he did play for AIK for two seasons is something that I can overlook.

The biggest thing here is that Kippers contract was built so that he would be easily traded in the last 2 years of it. The large cap hit low salary was supposed to appeal to low budget teams looking to hit the salary floor. He knew this when he signed it, and now he's refusing to be traded even though his NTC is gone?
I have mixed feeling on this.

I understand that there are some fans who will defend Kipper regardless of what he does, but I am not one of them. Kipper has every right to retire when he wants, but he should do it unequivocally. None of this continuing to play while threatening to retire if he doesn't get his way. The man should act like a professional. If he is threatening to retire, then just retire. I would have liked to have gotten some kind of return for him, regardless of how miniscule it may have been. The fact that he will now retire as a Flame does absolutely nothing for me. Who cares where he retires? He did great things as a Flame in the past, and that is what I will remember. If anything, this hurts his legacy. Completely mails it in and makes it clear that he has no interest in being competitive anymore. If that is his attitude, then I am glad he is done after this season.

I wish this was known before the season started rather than the day of the trade deadline. I guess I am little frustrated with that part, especially if he decided to do this a while ago. Hell, Mike Keenan even said when he was coach, Kipper wasn't planning to play out the last year.
Franchise player, great Flame for a decade, just wish his decision to ride into the sunset didn't happen just before dusk.

When you want to retire from your job, you give notice and pick a date. For some people that's two weeks and for others it can be a year. Why should he have to retire now instead of at the end of the season? Many athletes, Chipper Jones is the most recent I can remember, who state at the beginning of the season they are retiring at the end of the season. Why shouldn't Miikka play out the rest of the year?

Can we make a poll? Those in favor of Kiprusoff decision to stay put vs those who think he is being selfish. Then ban all those who think he is selfish. Easy way to clean up this forum.

Twitter speculation starting from a tweet from a TSN "expert" unless I missed something. Granted that's all a few people around here need to go right off the deep end.

I don't know. Kipper always struck me as a guy that marched by his own tune. a 1.5 million dollar final contract year didn't strike me as having much weight, especially with how poorly the Flames have done the previous 3 years...losing is a grind, especially for the guy in net 90% of the time...
now if the team was winning, then yes, i would have been surprised

I think he is just speculating.
I can see how it's easy for people to assume that, Kipper hasn't talked about retirement until this whole being traded business came up. It's not like he has been saying for a while now that he has been thinking of retiring, not in the media anyway so who knows.

Why wouldn't Calgary just trade him if it weren't? Why all this concern with who is allowed to speak with him? He doesn't have a NTC, so if he was not threatening to not report and retire if traded, Feaster could do whatever he wants with him. Makes absolutely no sense to hold onto him at this point otherwise.

I am confused here, correct me if I am wrong but the Leafs were taking to Kipper (and Larry Kelly) with the of getting Kipper not only to see if he wants to play in TO but to see if he'd be agreeable to extend his contract (they don't want a rental). Kipper after sleeping on it and talking to his family decided he doesn't not want a contract extension (maybe retiring who knows). So where did Kipper refuse a trade? He refused an extension.

Kipper has his priorities. He's content with not ever winning a Cup and realistically, the chances of the Leafs with Kipper winning a Cup is slim. Kipper knows that. There isn't a contender he can go to where he would be the missing piece.
As for Kipper just retiring already, I'm sure if Feaster asked him to retire he would. He's about to retire, and if he's traded to another team he will retire. It's no different from Chad Kilger being traded, refusing to report, and choosing to retire instead.

This organization has had the appearance of being pretty sleazy as of late, so I think this is a nice change.
I'm a recent father, I respect that he doesn't want to move. Obviously the Flames could still have traded him if they wanted to, but for once this year, they decided not to be dicks about it, and asked the player if he wanted to go or not.

geez...
yes, kipper is contractually obligated to go to any team calgary trades him to...if he wants to continue to play hockey.
if he retires, he has absolutely zero obligation to go anywhere.
As much as it may surprise people, these guys are not indentured servants: they can walk away any time they please, just like anyone can quit their jobs.
