Highly doubt it as he probably wants to be in Finland full-time when he retires.

I support his decision, but he should retire now instead of playing out the year. Maybe play one more game for a farewell

Retiring would save the Flames money, open up a contract spot, and dismiss any allegations that the last year of his deal was planned to be useless. It would also give Mac more starts, and maybe Ramo if he comes over at the end of his KHL season

Your probably right and the family angle is all they have to say to nip this in the bud if it becomes of anything.

Flames organization still has to be careful in what they say going forward though. Feaster and Ken King have not kept their mouths closed on past mistakes ( not that i think this is a mistake), and the last thing the flames need is Feaster blurting out "we have known this for a couple of years".

That's what I thought too, but according to reports, this was partially done because his family is having a hard time deciding to leave Calgary.

Kipper retiring vs. being traded would probably not crack the top 20 in terms of team mismanagement over the last 5 years.

Good Lord! He does not. Contracts are binding on TWO ends. He would only "owe" THE FLAMES (NOT "us") one more season IF he is being compensated by the team for his services.

No issue with this at all. The return was probably going to be negligible and I think his decision not to go is probably largely to due with not wanting to leave his wife and their new baby, particularly given there have been complications with the new arrival.

Good for Kipper stick to your guns i have said from the start of this whole topic.
He has more than earned the right to retire should that be his choice.

And if i year from now if he wants to come out of retirement he has the right to do that as well.

But the Flames would be stupid to rip up his contract. I would keep the rights open just in case he changes his mind in the off season.

People need to remember these players have lives and if he wants to retire to be there for his wife and family and now a pre-mature born newbie. I support that.
Kipper has been the back bone for this team for close to a decade.
Fans should show some class and chant Kipper at his last game as well.

You'd think Kipper was kicking puppies the way some people are reacting. Man can do as he pleases, such is his right.

I haven't read the whole thread, just two tweets, but how do people know it's a player screwing the team?

How do we know it's Kipper just deciding that he wants to retire at the end of the season, and the Flames deciding that rather than try and move arguably the most important player since he got here for a 4th round pick it's worth more to the organization have him retire a Flame AND let Kipper not have to worry about being a rental.

I like it when organizations do things to treat their players right, or it improves the chances that the team be a desirable destination if one wants to look at it from a purely self interested point of view.

I often say how proud I am to be a Flames fan. This thread is making me question that.

Kipper put this franchise on his back and now is being crucified for wanting to retire to spend time with his family. This was what was assumed would happen when the contract was signed and now people are mad because he doesn't want to play hockey anymore. He suffered an MCL injury and has a newborn going through extra issues this year. Are you really mad over missing out on a 3rd round draft pick in return for the best goalie our franchise has ever seen? If at your job you had one year left of work and they wanted to ship you to Toronto, wouldn't you consider retirement? I would.

Kipper was a soldier of Calgary. Honour him!

You know what the difference between not reporting and sitting at home and not reporting and retiring is when you still want to play? Nothing. The only way we will know is if kipper plays a single minute next year. Right now ill give him the benefit of the doubt.

People didn't know how lucky we were when we had TWO, freaking TWO, Franchise Players. Did you all realize? And now you treat Kipper with this? We had TWO Franchise players and what did Sundin do in Toronto which may not exceed what Kipper has done for this Flames franchise?

If there is an exception to the 'rules', #12 and #34 deserved it.

You sure are taking Dreger's word as gospel. As far as I know Kipper has said... almost nothing about this.

There are more than a couple people in this thread who made a habit of trashing Oiler and Canuck fans that are showing themselves to be giant hypocrites.
